The Pittsburgh Penguins were the number one seed entering the National Hockey League Playoffs and were one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. So, the Penguins being pulverized  at the hands of the Boston Bruins was definitely unexpected.

I know that the NHL playoffs can get pretty close at times with games going into double overtime.

However, the series between the Penguins and Bruins was something completely different.  The Penguins weren’t even close to being in it. The reason being they couldn’t solve Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask who, according to the Boston Globe, contributes that feat to teamwork.

“It tells a lot about our team to shut those guys down’’ Rask said.

That comment does ring true as you just cannot let forwards stand in front of your goalie all night long and expect him to make saves. However, Rask’s accomplishment shouldn’t be any less diminished.

The Penguins prior to the series with the Bruins was averaging 4.23 goals per a game this payoffs. Teams sometimes have bad series and score about half of what they were doing before. What happened to the Penguins is completely different and something that won’t be repeated again.

The Penguins being pulverized was unexpected in another way.

It looked like goal scoring was up as well. Teams were winning games by scores of 5-4 or 6-4. There were some games that were 1-0 or 3-1, but those were few and far in between. In the series between the Penguins and Bruins, the Bruins won games by scores of 3-0, 6-1, 2-1 and 1-0.

According to, for Bruins forward Jaromir Jagr it was about taking out Penguins superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

“They are great players. There is no question about it. It’s not easy when you’re them and everybody is waiting for you to do something,” Jagr said.

“It’s like in basketball when you have a good guy, and you double team them. You let somebody else beat you. If you’re going to play against Lebron James you’re going to put two guys on him, and let somebody else beat you. Let the Bird Man (Chris Anderson) beat you. He’s pretty good, but that’s the way it is.”

The Bruins beating the Penguins easily is going to have significant ramifications. What that means is that teams are going to start double teaming superstar players and a team’s other players score goals.

So, the Penguins being pulverized by the Bruins unexpectedly is going to force some changes next season
