Comic-Con Gets Super-Sized This Weekend

Comic-Con is back this coming weekend, bigger, badder, more super-sized than ever, so get ready, all of you fanboys and girls, to satisfy the Inner Geeks in each of you — the countdown has begun!

Are you going to go to the Comic-Con for the latest in comic books? How about just gawking at all of the colorful costumed superheroes there? Looking to pick up cool SWAG, a new T-shirt, or poster? Want to check out previews of upcoming movies, and get the chance to get autographs of your favorite celebrities? Whatever the case might be, get your ever-lovin’ buttocks there, True Believers (as Stan Lee says)!

Who are a few of the celebrities who will be at the Comic-Con?

Vin Diesel, for one, who enthusiastically says: “I’m always ready for Comic-Con!” He’s a long-time fan of Dungeons & Dragons and the main hero of the Fast & Furious movie franchise.

Vin Diesel will be there for the first time in ten years, and he is pumped up for it. Being there, he says, talking to your fans in person, is very special:

“You are connecting with true fanboys, and you are speaking to that core audience.”

Hugh Jackman of The Wolverine (July 26) and Sandra Bullock of the sci-fi dramaGravity (Oct. 4) are two other famous celebrities who will be there; unofficial king of Comic-Con, Joss Whedon, will make an appearance; and many, many more celebrities will head there, as well.

Comic-Con will be held at the San Diego Convention Center, beginning early — on Thursday, July 18, and it will run through Sunday. Its origins date to 1970. Over 125,000 people are expected to attend. many of them in costumes of their favorite comic book characters. The hottest new TV shows, upcoming movies, comic books, etc., will be featured there all weekend.

Actor Aaron Eckhart, who this year will preent footage from his movie, I, Frankenstein says of the Comic-Con:

“I went there for Battle: Los Angeles (in 2010), and I didn’t have any idea that people were so fervently into their films, and there were whole families in costumes,” says the actor, who this year will present footage from his I, Frankenstein(out Jan. 24).

Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green and Rodrigo Santoro will be there to promote 300: Rise of an Empire (due in March).

Whedon brings the new show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which takes the world of superhero films to HD TV this fall. Also, The X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are back together for a special 20th-anniversary reunion panel.

Why are Heavy Metal rock gods Metallica going to be at Comic-Con?

Metallica will be there to promote their movieMetallica Through the Never (Sept. 27) and perform in a secretly produced show. At first blush, it might seem odd that Metallica would appear at Comic-Con; but, comics aren’t just for nerds anymore, and Heavy Metal songs often bring fantasy, literature, and pop culture figures into their songs. Maston’s entire album, Moby Dick, was based o the Herman Melville novel by the same name, for instance, and Led Zeppelin has sung about places from The Lord of the Rings, like Mount Mordor, in their songs.

WThere will also be cool things to do, and listen to, like a panel for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Nov. 22). Who knows? Maybe even Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, might make an appearance, or maybe Bullock’s Gravity co-star George Clooney.

British director Edgar Wright will be there, doing a panel for his comedyThe World’s End (Aug. 23). He will also host a fan screening in town. The publicity producers, directors, movie companies, and actors can get from appearing at Comic-Con is invaluable.

Wright says that events like Comic-Con are vital to get the word out about films:

It’s actually a way for filmmakers to intersect with fans that you can’t in other situations.”

It’s almost Thursday, and Comic-Con will be more super-sized than ever! Bring out the inner Man of Steel in you (or Batman, Spiderman, etc.), suit up, and gear up for a long weekend of fun and fantasy!
