Long John Silver’s Big Catch is the Worst Restaurant Meal in America

According to laboratory tests released in July  by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Long John Silver’s Big Catch was ranked as the worst restaurant meal in America.

Big Catch is a meal that combines fried fish, hush puppies and onion rings — all delicious in themselves — which contain 33 grams of trans fat. Just how much fat is that? It’s more than twice the recommended daily limit by the American Heart Association.

Can you say heart attack in a carry-out box?

Though most restaurant chains have discontinued cooking with partially hydrogenated oil, Long John Silver’s still uses it. Partially hydrogenated oil is the main culprit in boosting trans fat levels.

How do meals at your favorite fast food restaurants stack up?

The fast-food restaurant that probably most people would have guessed would rank at #1, McDonald’s, comes in second place. They should receive some degree of credit, for attempting to include healthier meal items on their menu, but there are still many high-fat and unhealthy food choices that makes it no wonder that McDonald’s ranks high on this list of places that serve America’s worst restaurant meals.

McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese has 2.5 grams of fat. That’s far from perfect, but it almost seems like a healthy alternative when compared to Long John Silver’s Big Catch meal.

In third place is Burger King. Its Triple Whopper with Cheese has 2.0 grams of fat in it. I’m guessing that, since their hamburgers are grilled, some of the fat runs off — still, 2.0 grams is a lot of fat to consume at one sitting.

Fourth place goes to, of all places, Taco Bell. Their grilled XXL Stuft, (that’s how they spell it) Beef Burrito contains 1.0 grams of fat. I could deal with that at least once a week. After all, in comparison, even a PopTart or an Oreo Cookie has more fat content.

PopTarts: 200 calories each; a single serving size is just one, though two come in a package. The amount of calories and fat in PopTarts vary according to the type; but, each contains around 10 grams of fat.

There are also several different types of Oreos today.  A serving size is 3 Oreos. That equals 160 calories, and 7 grams of fat. Double Stuf has got to be one of the highest in fat content. A serving size is just two, comes in at 140 calories and 7 grams of fat.

That makes the fifth worst restaurant meal in America seem not so bad — almost. Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Country Fried Steak with Peppered Gravy, like Taco Bell’s XXL Stuft Beef Burrito, has 1.0 grams of fat.

As it is with practically any food, these “worse restaurant meals in America” are are not likely to be a serious problem for you in moderation. The trouble is, these meals are tasty, and become addictive.

It is possible to eat well and feel as if you’re satisfied without resorting to foods which are high in calories and fat, though —  I confess — walking by Oreos and PopTarts in the supermarket, I can hear them saying, “buy me.”

Also, when I drive by certain fast food restaurants, it’s difficult for me not to do a U-Turn and whip into a parking lot to grab a quick coronary-inducing bite to eat.

Yes, even including Long John Silver’s, though I have (so far) managed to steer away from their Big Catch meal, and have attempted to refrain from the fattiest of foods, there are some ‘worst for us’ restaurants in America.
