Justice For Trayvon 100 City Vigil
Trayvon Martin will be remembered around the country Saturday July 20, 2013 in a 100 city vigil.

In the wake of George Zimmerman’s aquital of murder charges against Trayvon Martin, Florida Gov (R) Rick Scott stands his ground on not repealing the states Stand Your Ground law, which agives average citizens the right to play cops and robbers. Florida Gov. Rick Scott met for about 30 minutes Thursday night with a group of young protesters who are occupying the Capitol to seek repeal of the state’s “stand your ground” law, reports the Miami Herald.

“I believe ‘stand your ground’ should stay in the books,” Scott said. “I agree with you, we should not have racial profiling.” Two statements which seemed to collide into each other considering that racial injustice is a very prominent part of the law. The 31-year-old mother of a toddler and 11-year-old twins, Marissa Alexander claimed self-defense and tried to invoke Florida’s “stand your ground” law, rejecting plea deals that could have gotten her a much shorter sentence. But a jury found her guilty as charged: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. And because she fired a gun while committing a felony, Florida’s mandatory-minimum gun law dictated the 20-year sentence.

Scott called for a statewide day of prayer for unity on Sunday. Ironically, the one thing that could possibly help to unite the community–the repeal of Stand Your Ground– is off the table at the moment.

For a man supposedly intent on uniting the state, he was surely absent for most of the past week. According to Central Florida News 13, Scott was in Tampa to meet with representatives from the entertainment industry when a journalist queried him on the Stand Your Ground law during a media availability. The governor was also in Bradenton to meet with business leaders.

It appears that Rick Scott has a difficult time standing anywhere, on any ground, too long these days. Scott has a well-known aversion to drama or confrontation, and his absence from Tallahassee struck some as a deliberate strategy to avoid facing a peaceful band of students, a trait highlighted by the Miami Herald.

This Saturday a 100 city vigil entitled “Justice for Trayvon” is set to kick off around the nation. In Orlando the vigil is planned for Noon at the George C. Young Federal Building & Courthouse, 80 N. Hughey Avenue in downtown Orlando. Organizers are asking youth to bring a bag of Skittles and wear a hoodie if possible.
