Cancer Fundraiser ‘Awesome Games Done Quick 2014’ Now Finished

Speedrun games for cancer prevention

The official date has ended for Awesome Games Done Quick 2014, but the bonus game stream continued to raise donations for an additional 70 hours. This year a large group of speed gamers came together in an attempt to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The original goal was $500,000. That goal has been met and exceeded. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars of donations.

For those that did not tune in, the games played covered a large span of years and different types of games. The non-stop game-fest continued for seven days straight and then kept going for bonus games. Even though the seven-day speedrun event  finished bonus games continued to bless the stream for a number of days. The bonus stream has a large number of games much more random than the main list along with the occasional multiple person game. Here are a few games that made it to bonus stream:

  • Rayman
  • Metal Slug
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Chester Cheetah’s Wild Wild Quest
  • Flower
  • Mario Party 2
  • Nintendo Land
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Cookie and Cream
  • Toki
  • Fire Emblem (7)

When making a donation it is possible to direct that donation to a certain donation incentive. Such examples include saving/ killing the animals at the end of Super Metroid, glitched speed runs after a run is finished, and entirely extra games to be played. The games that received the necessary goal appeared on bonus stream, and there was a lot that accomplished their goal. During the event those that donated to any part of Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 were entered into raffles for prizes donated by gamers and even bigger groups such as Blizzard.

The strength brought together for the event is downright staggering. More than a million dollars has been raised in a little more than one week to prevent cancer. The stream was full of touching stories about those that have had cancer influence their lives as well as encouragement to help all those that are still affected. The event brought a lot of people together to accomplish something truly meaningful.

You may have played some of these games in the past, but not like this. Some events were so amazing they must be watched. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out were both played blindfolded, Mirror’s Edge was played with two players on one controller, and Super Metroid had four different players racing to beat the game the fastest. The variety of games and ways to play these games is more than entertaining, it is inspiring. A list for the main events cam be found at the bottom of the article and bonus stream can be found on the SpeedDemosArchive Twitch page.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 has pulled together gamers and donors to set and exceed a goal for the good of everybody. The Prevent Cancer Foundation has received more than $1 million from the seven-day speedrun event. Thanks to everyone that donated and contributed, together Cancer can be prevented.
