Lex Luthor, Superman’s number one rival, will be played by Jesse Eisenberg of The Social Network fame, in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film (working title). For major Batman and Superman fans, the announcement of a movie that involves both characters is getting a lot of attention.
The fictional character, Lex Luthor is known for being more refined and intelligent than other comic book or super hero film villains, which makes the need for a top actor even greater. For the sequel to Man of Steel producers searched for someone who could give Lex Luthor depth and wisdom to make the main villain believable as a potential foil to Superman’s strength, superhuman abilities, and constant triumph. While armed with strength of mind and wit, Lex Luthor is not physically superior to Superman, so in comic book versions and prior portrayals of the character, a large purple and green suit has been used so that Lex is able to mechanically fight with power as a true opponent.
Jesse Eisenberg is actually similar to the character of Lex Luthor, who he has been cast to play in the new Batman vs. Superman film. While he is not physically dominant, he instead has brain power at his disposal. Warner Bros. Pictures’ choice for the villain is not met with all positive and understanding responses, but Zack Snyder, the film’s director, and one of its writers and producers, says that the choice of Jesse means that the character of Lex Luthor can be played with and explored in new and exciting ways for its fans.
When rumors that Ben Affleck was chosen to play Bruce Wayne, and his alter ego Batman, news sources went crazy. Diehard fans spoke out on social media outlets with disbelief, rage, and even acceptance of Ben in the role and the same is now happening with the announcement of Jesse as Lex. Also to join the cast, according to the Internet Movie Database, is Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince and her alter ego Super Woman, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Henry Cavill as Clark Kent and his alter ego Superman, and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White. Other sources are reporting that the role of Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s trusted butler, will be played by Jeremy Irons.
With an all-star cast, many with an Academy Award win or nomination on the resume, the Batman vs. Superman film is shaking things up. In the past, Bruce Wayne and Batman have been played by Lewis G. Wilson, Robert Lowrey, and Adam West. Plus, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale. The role of Alfred was most recently played by Michael Caine in The Dark Knight, and Kevin Spacey was the last man to bring the role of Lex Luthor to life in Superman Returns.
With Jesse Eisenberg taking on the role of Lex Luthor in the Warner Bros.’ film, Batman vs. Superman, fans of the super heroes will see a new face, and possibly a new trend in villain casting. Will Jesse be a good Lex Luthor? Chime in with comments below.
