Liverpool FC are rumored to have several prominent targets in the January transfer window, including Mohamed Salah and Cristian Tello. Liverpool has seen an unexpected amount of success this campaign, reaching fourth in the Premier League standings after New Year’s Day, and rumors are everywhere surrounding what moves manager Brendan Rodgers might make to keep them at the top of the table until the end. Expectations for the club were low to begin with, especially with the loss of Luis Suarez for the term of his suspension. Given the success that Liverpool has seen, however, there is no looking back. Fans are looking to find out if club management is willing to invest in keeping their run going, and who they might get.
Egyptian national, Mohamed Salah has been the recipient of the most speculation. Despite rumors of at least five other European clubs approaching Basel about acquiring Salah, Liverpool has consistently been reported as the most likely destination for him. Although reports in the Egyptian media have reported the deal as all but done and settled, but according to James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo, the deal is still in the works and the two clubs are still a fair distance apart. Initial reports had Liverpool making a £7 million offer, which was rejected. Metro indicated this week that another offer, reportedly for £9 million, which may have a better chance of being accepted. If the Swiss club should demand a higher contract, it is likely that Liverpool would wait until the summer to make another attempt. If the deal were to be made, Rodgers has indicated that he will likely send Raheem Sterling on loan to Swansea City.
Unlike with the Salah negotiations, Liverpool FC has denied reports that Barcelona player, Tello, is among the clubs transfer window targets. While they appear to have made inquiries about availability, there is no indication that any deal has been reached. According to the Spanish publication, Marca, Tello has voiced considerable concern over playing time. He could be a great complement to the Liverpool attack, but unless Rodgers is being coy, the move does not appear to be happening. Another Barca player, Pedro, has also been linked to Liverpool in rumors, but that speculation appears to be baseless. Reports are that he is content to stay where he is, eager to add to a scoring total of 14 goals already made this season for the Spanish club.
One player rumored to be on the Liverpool radar is Udinese midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who has indicated a desire to play in the Premier League. Jamie Sanderson reported that Liverpool may be planning on making a £7 million offer this week. This move appears more in line with the needs of the team than many of the rumors out there, and would provide the Liverpool forwards with substantially more cover than they are currently enjoying if it should come to pass. With Suarez and Philippe Coutinho establishing a dominating combination up front, most fans appreciate the need for a move of this nature to shore up the middle and press for more defensive consistency. With indications that both Arsenal and Tottenham have been pursuing the Udinese star, this would be a nice get for Rodgers.
As the week progresses, a more complete picture of which deals are going to be made will come into focus. At this point, however, a couple of things are becoming clearer. Of the Liverpool FC transfer window targets, Salah and Agyemang-Badu appear to be the most likely additions, with Tello still an unlikely possibility.
