Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead at his home, according to New York City police.

The 46-year-old actor was found by a screenwriter at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 2 in his Pickwick House apartment. He was in the bathroom, reportedly with a hypodermic needle in his arm. A police spokesperson also confirmed that there were two plastic bags found at the scene, along with a substance believed to be heroin. Currently suspicions are that he suffered a drug overdose, but investigations into his death are still continuing. A medical examiner still has to carry out an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death.

Hoffman was an Academy Award-winning actor and director. He won the Best Actor award for his role as Truman Capote in Capote in 2005. He has also starred on Broadway in Death of a Salesman and directed other stage plays like In Arabia, We’d All Be Kings.

He was also Pultarch Heavensbee in Hunger Games: Catching Fire, in which he would have renewed the role for the last two movies of The Hunger Games trilogy. The cast are currently in the middle of filming the final movie of the franchise, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, in which the character would have appeared. There has been no word how the cast will handle this.

The last actor to die during filming was Paul Walker in November 2013. After some discussion, it seems that the director has decided killing off Walker’s character in the movie is the best option. During the filming of the Harry Potter franchise, Richard Harris died. He played Albus Dumbledore, a very important role throughout the series of books. There was no choice but to replace the man who played the character for the remaining movies. Will this be something that they do for Hoffman after his being found dead at his home?

Celebrities who knew the actor have shared their condolences. Robert de Niro was one actor sharing how deeply saddened he was to hear of the passing of such a “wonderful actor.” Jennifer Lawrence shared her sadness on Twitter, saying that he “made an excellent Pultarch.” Lawrence plays Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Game movies. Kevin Costner explained to Associated Press how much of a great loss it is has been. He also hinted that Hoffman possibly had much more to give the Hollywood scene, but now all is left is the “legacy of the work” he has already done.

Despite having such success with Capote in 2005, his most successful movie to date revenue-wise was Hunger Games: Catching Fire. It grossed $860 million around the world. However, he may have considered the awards he won and nominations he gained more as a sign of success. As well as winning the award of Capote, he was nominated for three Tony awards for his work on Broadway.

He had previously admitted a drug problem and sought treatment in rehab. It is with great sadness that Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan home, and it is time for his family—partner Mimi O’Donnell and children Tallulah, Willa and Cooper—to grieve.
