Anna Kendrick in Heaven Hosting Saturday Night Live

Anna Kendrick Hosting Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live has a tradition to take a popular actor or actress and letting them host the show for the evening. Previous Saturday Night Live hosts have been Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake and many, many more. Recently, newcomer Anna Kendrick found herself in heaven being the newest Saturday Night Live host.

Anna Kendrick did not become a super star right out of the gate. She had her slow climb, being in supporting roles here and there. Her most notable supporting role was perhaps in the Twilight series, playing a pretty forgettable role. Her role in the vampire movie did not allow her to show off any of her acting abilities. Later she got a supporting role in Scott Pilgrim Versus the World, where she played the title character’s sister. She was in it enough to demonstrate a decent amount of comedic skills, but not enough to launch her into stardom.

She got her big break starring alongside George Clooney in Up in the Air. In the movie she plays George Clooney’s protégé. She starts working for a company that gets hired by contractors to fire their employees. Her character starts to slowly realise that working for a company whose main source of income is by firing people is disgustingly inhuman. George Clooney is the main character, but he is a master at his job. When a movie introduces audiences to a new world they need an avatar. Someone who knows nothing so that as they learn about this new world, so does the audience. Kendrick was the audience’s avatar. Kendrick had a very tough job to do in this movie because she was required to be an average girl in order to be an avatar, but still have a personality. Thanks to this portrayal, she was nominated at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress.

But the movie that solidified her status as a leading actress was the hit musical-comedy Pitch Perfect. In Pitch Perfect Kendrick plays a rebellious young woman who joins an all-girl acapella group. This movie showed that Kendrick could pull off being a leading actress in a financially successful movie, but it also proved she could sing incredibly well. This movie has earned Kendrick a fan following and she is due to appear in the sequel Pitch Perfect 2.

Due to her rising star, Saturday Night Live saw fit to promote her as the new host. At the beginning of the show Kendrick stands in front of the audience, very nervous and shy. She admits to her audience that ever since she was a little girl she had wanted to host Saturday Night Live. Her love for performance came to her when she saw Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. This mention was a clever segue into a rendition of Beauty and the Beast’s opening number “Belle”. Only in this case, Kendrick is singing about how heavenly it is to host Saturday Night Live; the supporting cast start singing about how little they get paid and how being a host is no big deal, all behind her back of course.

That was not the only song Kendrick performed. She also performed the hilarious “Dongs All Over the World.” In this sketch, she plays a “nasty girl” who along with her girlfriends travel around world to get it on with foreign men. Saturday Night Live has never shied away from raunchy content. Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg performed their “D*** in a Box” which became a Youtube sensation. Anna Kendrick hosting Saturday Night Live was well received by critics, and it was heaven for any of her fans.
