The Chevrolet Corvette has come a long way. The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 model, which is all set to be debuted next week at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, has lost its top on the design table, much to the delight of its many fans. The stunning pictures were released online by the company, just ahead of the show and surprised many industry watchers and automobile enthusiasts. With it’s trimmer shape and supercharged engine, the new model is setting quite a few hearts a-racing.
With 625 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque, the LT4 6.2-liter V8 engine packs quite the punch, especially for a convertible. This is despite the fact that the convertible has to make room for the collapsible roof and has to compensate for the lower rigidity in the car’s frame due to the missing top of the model.
Surprisingly, the new drop-top model did not need any reinforcement in its chassis. According to Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter, the designers took advantage of a multitude of advancements in the field of automobile technology. This included new generation computer-aided engineering, metallurgical finds, and manufacturing techniques. According to Jeuchter, most of these cutting edge finds were not available five years ago.
The new technology manifests itself in the new model’s aluminum structure, which is 20 percent stiffer than the older Z06 coupe. Additionally, he states that the new lightweight structure of the topless model is tough enough to handle the same stresses such as braking, cornering, and acceleration as other “Corvette’s top performance models.”
Another exciting feature is the new electronic cloth top of the powerful convertible. For the color conscious, it is offered in one of four different colors. The roof can be lowered using the key fob or on the road, at speeds up to 30 mph.
Besides the changed silhouette, the Corvette convertible still offers all the same performance features as its hardtop antecedent, which includes a choice of seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions, and General Motor’s magnetically-controlled active suspension system. And if a buyer desires, the new Z06 can be kitted out with the Z07 Performance Package, which is chockfull of features that include Brembo brakes made of a carbon-ceramic matrix, Michelin high performance tires and adjustable aerodynamic components, both in the front and back.
Mark Reuss, executive vice president, of GM’s Global Product Development department called the new Z06 Corvette convertible a “world-class super car in every sense.” Comparing it with other convertibles, he said that the new model of the Z06 was a standard bearer in that particular segment, given the advanced technologies that have been incorporated in the car. According to Reuss, it all added up to give the owner a deeply visceral driving experience.
Agreeing with him, Jeuchter said that the performance bandwidth of the new Chevrolet Corvette was par excellence. He said that there were very few cars that could compete with the unique combination of high performance, long distance commuting, daily driving, and the wind-in-your-hair driving experience found in the new Z06, a true track meets street car.
Drivers can choose between two seating choices: a GT seat that offers support and comfort or a Competition Sport seat that is meant to provide more support through side bolstering. All models come with a fully wrapped interior that includes soft-touch materials such as Napa leather and sueded microfiber.
Chevrolet has not released the pricing of their latest offering. The new Chevrolet model, which much to automobile enthusiasts’ glee, lost its top along the way, is expected to go on sale early next year.
