Stephen Colbert Comes With Unique Background

Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman when he retires in 2015, and will bring his unique background to this gig.  Among the reasons which mark him as such a different personality if the fact that his ancestry is actually Irish, and a French pronunciation of his name is fairly out-of-place. The accent he grew up with is that of a southerner from South Carolina. He believed that people look down at southerners and don’t see them as intelligent people, so he worked to change his accent by copying TV news anchors.

Stephen Colbert is from a large family. He comes from a family of 11 children. He lost his father and two brothers in an airplane crash in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 11, 1974. The two brothers were going to Connecticut to register at a private school. His mother relocated the family as a result.

To deal with his grief, he became immersed in fantasy and science fiction. He especially liked the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

When he was a child, he did wish to be a marine biologist. He had surgery to fix a perforated ear drum. The surgery did not go too well and ended up damaging his inner ear. To be a marine biologist, a person has to go scuba diving. A person cannot scuba dive with a damaged inner ear. The damaged inner ear also caused him to become deaf in the right ear. The damage to his inner ear changed the course of his life.

Stephen Colbert started becoming well-known on The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He joined the show in 1997 in its second season. The Daily Show is supposed to be a parody of a news show and the show has news correspondents. Unlike the other news correspondents, he developed a persona that he would later h on The Colbert Report. When John Stewart took over the show in 1999, the correspondents would do more in-studio segments. Some of these segments would have Colbert’s new persona go up against people who had great knowledge. They would eventually show that Colbert’st persona was not really very knowledgeable about the world. Colbert won three Emmys for his work on the Daily Show.

The Colbert Report was a Daily Show spin-off. Colbert started hosting it in 2005. It is a parody or satire of right-wing show like The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity on Fox News. Colbert pretends to be a man who is very right-wing. He uses this persona to criticize the conservative view, while making it difficult for right-wingers to complain because they can’t tell if it is Colbert or his persona that is complaining about them.

The Colbert Report did recently get in trouble when somebody tweeted on The Colbert Report account that a man would be starting a very racist sounding Asian foundation. The tweet was making fun of the Washington Redskins owner who has started a foundation that is friendly towards native Americans to counteract the racist name of his team. It is assumed that the tweet was meant in fun as it is a comedy show

On April 10, 2014, it was announced that Colbert would be the new host of The Late Show. It is not certain when he will start except that it will be a year from now. Colbert has made it clear that he will not be using his right-wing persona on the show. The persona will be retired for now.

Stephen Colbert has come from a unique background to get the Letterman gig. Like his prior shows, it should be interesting.
