Adele took to Twitter on Sunday, one day ahead of her 26th birthday, and tweeted a cryptic message that has excited fans believing that her third album is scheduled to be released this year. The British singer posted a make-up free selfie while giving the thumbs up and lying in bed, along with the message, “Bye bye 25 … See you later in the year x.” The tweet has fueled speculation that her new album, which will be named 25 following her tradition of naming her albums by the age at which they were recorded, will be released this year.
Adele landed her first recording contract in 2006 after a friend posted her demo on Myspace. She won the “Critics’ Choice” award at the Brit Awards the very next year. In 2008, she won the annual BBC poll of critics and industry members, the Sound of 2008. Her breakout 2008 record was titled 19, which was followed by her smash album, 21, in 2001. Her debut, 19, enjoyed critical and commercial success, going platinum four times in the UK and reaching double platinum in the U.S. She won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009.
She followed the success of 19 with the record-breaking 21, which was the best selling album of 2011 and 2012, and sold over 30 million copies. Additionally, the LP became the first to go double platinum in the U.S. on iTunes. She received six Grammy Awards, an amount that tied the record for most Grammys won in one night by a female artist, for her album 21, which contained chart-topping singles such as Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You and Rumour Has It. Adele won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her song, Skyfall, which was written as the theme song to the James Bond movie of the same name. Since 2013, she has been maintaining a low profile and focusing on raising her 1 1/2 –year-old son, Angelo, with charity entrepreneur, Simon Konecki. Angelo is Adele’s first child.
Adele is a different sort of celebrity. She is not thin and could be described as overweight. She has stated that she is happy with her weight and sees no reason to lose weight unless her health or sex life are affected, which has gained her a lot of support among her fans, who feel as though they are represented more by Adele than other, thinner stars.
Sunday’s tweet was not the first hint that new music might be coming from Adele. Singer Phil Collins told Inside South Florida in January that he was writing songs with the singer and that she would be back in the public eye soon. Collins went on to praise the incredible achievements accomplished by Adele, adding, “I really love her voice.”
Another hint was dropped in March by Ryan Tedder, who collaborated with Adele on the songs Rumour Has It and Turning Tables, when he confirmed reports that he and Adele were working together on her new project. In addition, Wiz Khalifa admitted to collaborating with Adele on a new song, describing it as “really hippie.”
As far as the direction the new album might take, Adele herself said in 2012 that after taking an extended break from recording, any new album released would be much happier in spirit. “I’m never writing a breakup record again, by the way,” she said. “I’m done with being a bitter witch.”
