Maleficent in Theaters May 30th

Maleficent is the new Disney film entering theaters on May 30th. This film is based on of the 1959 Disney cartoon movie Sleeping Beauty. Unlike the cartoon, this story follows popular villain, who is played by the Angelina Jolie.

Maleficent is an interesting take on Sleeping Beauty. The film portrays the famous villain as a good girl turned bad. The highly misunderstood fallen fairy is in a revenge feud with the King and Auroras father. When the King threatens the safety of her forest, she leads a mystical army into a battle against the kingdom. This leads her to cast a spell on the Princess Aurora when she was just an infant. Sixteen years later, when she meets the young woman again, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to saving the kingdom and takes her under her wing.,

Disney princesses have always been a well elaborated subject for the company, but never before has a villain been the lead role in one of their films. Maleficent is a well-known villain who has always symbolized darkness and evil. The new film adapts a new take on the classic sorcerer, suggesting that she was forced to the dark side.

Angelina Jolie has a very powerful presence, which makes her role as a potential super villain very fitting. With her intimidating features and high cheekbones, she plays a convincing bad guy. Staying true to the nature of the original Disney film, Maleficent curses a young Princess Aurora, who is played by Elle Fanning. Fanning fits nicely into this role as well with her innocent and soft character. The story puts a twist on the traditional good versus evil scenario, leading viewers to believe that nothing is truly as it seems.

The film features a number of other talents as well, including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s five-year-old daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. Fans will be seeing Juno Temple and Branton Thewaites, as the prince as well. Also on the bill is singer Lana Del Ray, who covers “Once Upon a Dream” for the film. Maleficent is the first film Oscar-winning visual effect coordinator Robert Stromberg has ever directed. Stromberg was the mastermind behind Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), The Hunger Games (2012), and a number of other amazing productions. Judging from his past creations, he is sure to send viewers on a visual adventure into a medieval and magical world.

Ever since Gregory Maguire created the Broadway play, Wicked, revised fairy tales have been all the rage. Disney joined the pack with their rendition of Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012. With the Disney movie Frozen still making big bucks, it will be a challenge for any future films to move out of its shadow.

Maleficent is an action packed movie filled with magical creatures and the forces of good and evil. Disney shows the audience a side of Sleeping Beauty never before seen in this fairy tale epic. Rated PG, this movie is a great film to bring the whole family. Maleficent will be hitting theaters on May 30th.
