Natalie Dormer recently opened up about her half-shaved head. The Game of Thrones star had everyone talking about it when she stepped out on the red carpet at the SAG Awards in January. It was something that fans had never seen before and were especially shocked considering they are so used to seeing her long luxurious locks.
Dormer is well known for her roles as Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones and Anne Boleyn in The Tudors, and in both cases her long, luxurious dark locks have been part of her character’s looks. However, she chose to shave half her head for the sake of another movie role.
She is playing the role of Cressida in the upcoming Hunger Games movies, which will be the Mockingjay book split into two parts. Cressida is part of the media team, and has half of her head shaved in the books. It is clear that the 32-year-old actress wanted to give fans of the books something authentic, and shaving her own hair off was the best way to do that. Photos from the set show that she has the vine tattoo that Cressida has added on through makeup to finish the look.
Fans were shocked at the actresses decision, especially considering she still has the role in Game of Thrones. However, the fantasy show based on George R.R. Martin’s Songs of Ice and Fire has a habit of using wigs for its actors. Both Emilia Clarke and Lena Hadley use wigs instead of changing their natural hair colors.
Dormer recently opened up about her half-shaved head, and decision to opt for the authentic look. Plenty of stars have made more drastic decisions for the sake of entertainment, and she made it clear that “hair grows back.” It was also nothing compared to some of the things that people go through around the globe.
Friends of the British actress as if they can touch her head due to the out-of-the-ordinary look, and she happily lets them. It is like getting a free massage. She did admit that the new hairstyle felt weird at first, but it just took time to get used to it. However, having the new hairstyle has meant that she can take on some edgier looks when she is out in public.
Personality-wise, the actress explained that she is nothing like the characters she has played. In real life, she is a little shy, so the new haircut was a big change for her. Engaged to director and writer Anthony Byrne, she would never act as predatory as the women she plays as she is a “serial monogomist.” She also finds some of the sex scenes difficult and embarrassing on set, especially when she knows the actors as friends in real life.
During her interview with Glamour Magazine, she also acknowledged that hair defines the femininity of a woman, which made the decision harder. However, Dormer is dedicated to her characters, and she proved that by opening up about shaving half her head for the sake of the Hunger Games: Mockingjay movies.
