Game of Thrones

Lena Headey, lead actress on Game of Thrones, has been showing her Cersei side coming out with some of her latest Instagram spoilers. Cersei Lannister, the character she plays, is the Queen married the King of the Realm Robert Baratheon and the mother of King Joffrey who succeeds him. She is also incessantly plotting and back-stabbing, much like most of the characters in the series. The clever allusions to the show and the way Headey responds, in some ways, reflect the character she plays.

One of the photos Headey posted on her Instagram some three months ago shows her pressing her thumbs into the eye sockets of Pedro Pascal, an actor who played Oberyn Martell in the show. Fans caught up to the latest episode will recognize resemblance to the exact way that Oberyn died, including his pained and screaming expression. It is hard to take the photo as anything less than foreshadowing of the future events. The Australian website News has noted this as the first time Headey broke the “golden spoiler rule” on her accounts. If she did it once, she could do it again. The viewers and TV journalists became vigilant.

Game of ThronesThe latest fan-rage began with a photo Headey put up showing a heart made of rocks and captioned “my stone heart.” Many of the show’s followers who have read the books took it as a prediction that one of the characters in the novels, Lady Stoneheart, would be making an appearance. This, however, turned out not to be the case, leading to some disappointment.

What is most amusing about this Instagram Game of Thrones un-spoiler, however, is that Headey once again let her Cersei side emerge with a brilliant response. She appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live Talk Show wearing a t-shirt stating “I’m not sorry” wrapped in a heart. She also elaborated that the picture was nothing more than her drunkenly playing with rocks, as Vanity Fair reports. Many of the scenes in the series show Cercei enjoying a glass of wine while making some mischievous arrangements.

Browsing through Headey’s Instagram photos could lead hardcore fans of Game of Thrones into hyper-drive paranoia. With one confirmed spoiler (the Oberyn death), and one un-spoiler (the stone heart), it is not clear which photos are playful teases, sublime spoilers, or simply the actress having fun with her camera. Looking hard enough, one can find links between any vague photo and events in the book or the show. One of the greatest strengths of the human mind is the robust pattern recognition, after all. It is definitely fun to speculate based on the casts’ online postings, but getting hung up on these predictions is nothing more than an unnecessary exercise in self-frustration.

Perhaps all these teases are all too fitting, however, the Game of Thrones Instagram spoilers show how Cersei’s character might be influencing Headey. The Queen Regent is a strong and bold woman who is always plotting behind everyone’s back, planning the next ruse to get what she wants. Just like her real life counterpart, she never seems to be sorry for any of her mischievous actions, or even know what the word “sorry” really means. Maybe Headey is just taking some inspiration from the character and having a bit of cheeky fun in the spirit of the show.
