CMA Awards Show Great Blend of Awards and Music [Recap & Video]

CMA awards

The 48th annual Country Music Association (CMA) awards show was once again hosted by country music greats Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. It marked the seventh year in a row they both co-hosted the CMAs. They are pretty funny and jovial co-hosts. It was broadcast live on November 5 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

The CMA awards show began with Kenny Chesney performing one of his hits, American Kids. Then, Miranda Lambert and Miranda Lambert sang a pretty cool version of All That Bass. It actually turned out to be very cool, despite how that combination might sound like at first.

Miranda Lambert leads all nominations this year with a total of nine. One of them is for the night’s biggest honor, Entertainer of the Year. Last year, it was won by George Strait. A win by Lambert would make her the first woman since Taylor Swift won in 2011 that a female would win the award.

Brad and Carrie were great hosts of the CMA awards. George Strait was in the audience, and Brad kept talking about how great it would be if George was there, with Carrie telling him “He’s here, Brad, he’s here” without his acting like he believed her.

They did a parody of Jolene about the nurse who was quarantine with Ebola, which they called Quarantine. It was LOL hilarious! Then, they made jokes about Post Partum Taylor Swift Disorder. Carrie said “I’m pretty sure it’s why the Democrats lost the election.”

Carrie told Brad that Ariana Grande was there tonight, and asked Brad if he liked Ariana Grande. He said “No, I don’t like coffee.” Carrie also said that Garth Brooks was there and would be presenting the final award of the night, Entertainer of the Year. Then Brad sang a parody of Walk the Line singing about taking “This selfie of mine,” and being “naked on line.”

If Lambert wins the Entertainer of the Year, she’d be the first female artist to have won the award since Taylor Swift won it back in 2011. It would also make her only the seventh female artist to have ever won the award.

Steven Tyler presented the first of the CMA awards of the night. It was the one for Single of the Year. Automatic by Miranda Lambert won. It was her first win in the Single of the Year category. She had her first win of the night already!

After a commercial break, Brad tried to help Meghan Trainor become country by singing about All about That Bass, the fish, that is. Then, Lady Antebellum sang their hit, Hey, Bartender. It was terrific, and they really got the audience into it, cheering and screaming at various points during the song.

Then, Florida Georgia Line performed one of their popular songs, and the audience seemed to really enjoy listening to it. The CMA awards went to another break, after they finished.

Brad cracked another joke, then introduced Keith Urban. Keith will be returning to American Idol this season as one of the judges. He sang and did a fantastic job, and he jammed out of the guitar, as well, kickin’ some butt, musically speaking.

Darius Rucker and Tim Tebow then came onstage to present the CMA awards show award for Song of the Year. There were several great nominated songs, but it went to Follow Your Arrow, by Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark, and Shane McAnally.

After that, The Band Perry paid tribute to singer Glen Campbell by singing his hit, Gentle on my Mind. It sounded really great, though nobody could sing it quite like Glen, when he was healthy. They did an amazing job and made it their own, with a somewhat different version of the original.

After another commercial break, the CMA awards came back and Carrie acknowledged this year’s inductees into the CMA Hall of Fame. Ronnie Milsap led the nominees. Then, Carrie introduced Kacey Musgraves singing the song You’re Lookin’ at Country. She introduced Loretta Lynn, who joined her in singing the song. They got a standing ovation as they finished.

Then, the next CMA Awards show award presented was for New Artist of the Year. There were some terrific singers nominated, as usual. The award went to Brett Eldridge. He said “This is a dream!” to win the award.

Jason Aldean sang one of his hits next from his latest album, Old Boots, New Dirt, called Burnin’ It Down. After that, Little Big Town and Ariana Grande performed. They had drummers in the background that were dressed in red and black clothes like a drum line.

Ariana was great, also — she came onto the stage singing Bang Bang, one of her biggest hits. She ROCKED IT OUT, with the help of Little Big Town and the drummers. That got the entire audience on their feet, giving them a standing ovation! Then, the CMA awards show went to yet another commercial break.

Next, Brad shared photos and said that Chevy was helping with donating money to provide musical instruments for children. Tim McGraw sang his hit, Shotgun Rider, from his latest album, Sundown Heaven Town.

The CMA Awards show award for Vocal Duo of the Year was presented to Florida Georgia Line. It marked the second time they have won the award.

Dierks Bentley was up next after more commercials on the CMA Awards show, singing his hit Drunk on a Plane. He got the audience pumped up with his performance. Behind him the electronic screens looked like they were announcing incoming flights. He put on an awesome job singing this cool song.

Then, the CMA Awards show award for Album of the Year was presented. The award went to Platinum by Miranda Lambert! That is two wins so far for her — she has been getting more awards lately than her talented husband, Blake Shelton.

Back from another commercial break, on the CMA Awards show, Carrie Underwood introduced Brad Paisley singing one of his hits. The audience swayed their hands in the air as he sang and the females in the audience screamed and cheered as he sang.

Then, Brad introduced Blake Shelton, who sang one of his latest hits, Lonely Tonight, joined by Ashley Monroe. They performed a terrific duet of this song. It was one of the many highlights of the night.

More commercials followed, and then Brad introduced Carrie Underwood singing Something in the Water. She has a powerful, soaring voice, with an amazing vocal range. There was a choir of background singers behind Carrie and she sang louder and clearer than all of them combined. She got a standing ovation, also.

The next CMA Awards show award was for Vocal Group of the Year. The award was won by Little Big Town! There were still some big awards left to be presented, including Entertainer of the Year — will Miranda win this award, to add to her trophy case?

Trisha Yearwood presented the CMA Awards show award for Male Vocalist of the year. This was one of the other big awards of the evening. It was won by Blake Shelton! He was not to be denied, finally grabbing a major CMA Awards show award tonight.

That left the CMA Awards show award for Female Vocalist of the Night and the one for Entertainer of the Year. The award was won by…Miranda Lambert! She is racking up the CMA awards tonight! There will likely be a lot of celebrating in the Blake Shelton/Miranda Lambert household tonight after the show.

Then, finally, the moment came when Garth Brooks presented the CMA Awards show award for Entertainer of the Year. The winner of the award was not Miranda Lambert. It was won by Luke Bryan.

Some of the other awards presented the last hour of the CMA Awards show included one for Musical Event of the Year, won by We Were Us; Musician of the Year, by Mac McAnally; and Music Video of the Year, won by Dierks Bentley with his video, Drunk on a Plane.
