MTV EMAs Showcased Best Music of Today [Recap]


The MTV EMAs, broadcast from Glasgow, Scotland, were hosted by the fantastic hip-hop performer, Nicki Minaj, this year. The show began with a young girl with pink hair, who looked like a younger version of Nicki Minaj, being pulled into a TV set and drawn through the years to the present day, when she was Nicki Minaj, hosting the MTV EMAs.

The Global Icon award was presented to Ozzy Osbourne later in the show by Slash. Katy Perry has been nominated the most amount of times, with nine altogether. Ariana Grande has the second most nominations, at six. Pharrell Williams and 5 Seconds of Summer both have five nominations each.


Ariana Grande kicked off the show by singing her hit, Problem. Then, she sang Break Free, and rocked the audience at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow out.

Six songs in all were nominated for the MTV EMAs Best Song award. They were The Monster by Eminem (featuring Rihanna); Dark Horse by Katy Perry (featuring Juicy J); Pharrell Williams’ Happy; Nicki Minaj’s hit, Anaconda; Sam Smith’s hit, Stay With Me; and, Problem by Iggy Azalea (featuring Ariana Grande). Ariana Grande took home this award with the song Problem. She was presented the award by Alicia Keys and British singer Emeli Sande.

Nicki Minaj said it was the 20th anniversary of the MTV EMAs. She said she wanted to give some o fht epeople in the audience a “Glasgow kiss” but then she said she had heard that meant a “head-butt.” Minaj introduced Kiesza performed Hideaway in a telephone booth onstage at the MTV EMAs.

Royal Blood, from the U.K., performed onstage next. They sounded great.

The five singers/acts nominated for the Best Pop award are Miley Cyrus, One Direction, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and 5 Seconds of Summer. One Direction won this award.

The award for Best U.S. Act had five people/acts nominated. They were Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Fifth Harmony and Eminem. The winner was chosen based on the votes of fans. Fifth Harmony was the winner!

There were five performers who were nominated for the MTV EMA for Best Hip-Hop performer or act. The five were Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Drake and Eminem. The host of the show, Nicki Minaj, won this MTV EMAs award.


U2 then performed a song, Every Breaking Wave, off of their latest album. Bono was AMAZING, as usual!

Then, in the category of Best Female musical artist, five fantastic females have been nominated. They were Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Beyoncé. Ariana Grande won this MTV EMAs award, her second tonight.

There were also five males who were nominated for the Best Male musical artist award. They were Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams and Eminem. Justin Bieber won this award, for the fifth year in a row.

There were also five people/acts nominated for the MTV EMAs award for Best Live performance. The five were Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, One Direction, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry. The winner of this award was one Direction. The Best Push award was won by 5 Seconds of Summer. One Direction won three awards, another being one for Biggest Fans and the third was the Best Pop one. They accepted their awards via satellite.

The Best New MTV EMAs musical performer or act award had five performers/acts nominated for it. The five were Charli XCX, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Kiesza, and 5 Seconds of Summer. The winner this year was 5 Seconds of Summer!

The six videos that were nominated in the category of MTV EMAs Best Video were all terrific and worthy of winning. They were Black Widow by Iggy Azalea (featuring Rita Ora); Sia’s Chandelier; Kiesza’s Hideaway; Dark Horse by Katy Perry (featuring Juicy J); and, Happy by Pharrell Williams. Katty Perry’s Darkhorse video won.

There were five acts nominated for the MTV EMAs Best Rock act/group award. Those five were The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Linkin Park, Coldplay and Imagine Dragons. Lincoln Park won this MTV EMAs award.

Then, there were also five acts/performers who were nominated for the MTV EMAs for Best Alternative performer/act. They were Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and Thirty Seconds to Mars. Thirty Seconds to Mars picked up this award; well done!


Other awards presented included the one for Best World Stage, which was won by Enrique Iglesias, and one for Best Look, won by Katy Perry.Bibi Zhou (Southeast Asia / China & Hong Kong / Taiwan) won the MTV EMAs Best Worldwide award. The MTVA EMAs Best Song With A Social Message award went to Beyoncé for her song, Pretty Hurts.

Finally, the MTV EMAs award for Best Electronic performer/act had five performers/acts nominated. Those were Hardwell, Calvin Harris, Avicii, David Guetta and Afrojack. Calvin Harris was the winner.

The MTV EMAs were spectacular this year, and Nicki Minaj was a great host. The performances were pretty cool, also. Please leave any comments below!
