Insurgent, the sequel to the hit dystopian science-fiction film Divergent just released the first full-length trailer for the upcoming film and it introduces the beginnings of an all-out war to the series. Picking up immediately where the first film left off, Insurgent is destined to be packed with twice the amount of action and drama that took place in the original film.
The story follows the likes of a young girl named Tris who is played by Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley. Set in a futuristic version of Chicago, the Divergent series displays the order of five different factions that each serve a purpose in the modern society. Each faction is specific in their importance to the city whether it be law and order, technological advances or if the faction is comprised of the society’s protectors. Tris breaks the pattern when she discovers that she is susceptible to multiple factions, not just one. This result deems her as a Divergent, which is a threat to the faction system.
Tris’s Divergence is keep secret throughout the duration of the initial film until the Erudite faction, those who prioritize intelligence above all, deem themselves worthy to garner control over the entirety of the city of Chicago. Tris is then forced to do all in her power to stop the Erudite from eradicating the population they deem less worthy and is joined by a select group of characters that support her actions. The resilience succeeds in temporarily halting the Erudites’ attempts and escape to the outskirts of the city.
Insurgent will showcase the Erudite leader, Jeanine (played by Oscar winner Kate Winslet) seeking out Tris and the rebels in hopes of using the Divergent breed to unlock a certain technology needed to accomplish what they believe will give the people of Chicago the future they deserve. The rebels make their move to meet with the factionless citizens who is lead by Evelyn (Naomi Watts), the mother of Tris’s love interest Four (Theo James). Together the factionless and the rebels form an alliance and begin to wage war against Jeanine and the supporters of the Erudite cause.
The trailer to the film also introduced another Oscar-winning actress as part of the principal cast. The Help star Octavia Spencer will take on the role of the leader of the Amity faction, the farmers of the land who dwell in peace. Other stars from the first film will be reprising their role in Insurgent as well. Miles Teller will return as the mischievous and deceitful Peter and Jai Courtney will make an appearance as Eric, the former Dauntless warrior trainer who has now turned to become a main supporter and soldier for Jeanine’s cause. Ansel Elgort will play Tris’s brother Caleb yet again, an interesting paradox as he played Woodley’s love interest earlier this year in the young adult drama The Fault In Our Stars.
The new trailer to Insurgent has brought war into the Divergent series, promising even higher stakes this time around. The film releases on March 20, 2015 and the trailer can be viewed below.
