For anyone who grew up watching the Disney channel in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s, there were any number of shows and cartoons that were considered must watch at the time. Among the list of those shows is Ducktales which was on the air from 1987 until 1990. The show followed the adventures of Uncle Scrooge McDuck and his grandnephews Louie, Dewey and Huey with appearances by Donald Duck, as well as a number of other citizens of the town. Fans of the show received some exciting news from Disney on Wednesday, when it was announced that there were plans for a DuckTales reboot in the works. Based on the company’s statement, it would seem that fans of the series will get a chance to watch new episodes as soon as 2017 on Disney XD.
When the show originally aired on the Disney channel, it was one of the network’s Emmy-winning programs. With a reboot scheduled for 2017, the show is set to start in time for its 3o year anniversary. The original animated program was considered a comedy and followed the residents of Duckburg through all of their elaborate adventures and schemes. The family explored the world with a dash of drama and humor that entertained viewers for the entire run of the original series.
This is not the first time that Disney has done a reboot of some type for the Ducktales franchise. A video game based on the show was produced for Nintendo Entertainment Systems and was then remastered in 2013. Although the new version of the game did not receive the best reception from critics, it did in fact increase interest in the series and the characters. On top of the video game helping to garner new interest in the series, there is also a video featuring the original theme song for the show. In the new video however, instead of the original animation, the music is accompanied by a video with live ducks. Some of the opening credits are still represented in the video even though real ducks are used in the place of the animated characters.
The Disney company is saying that they will be following the idea of the original show with big adventures. Ducktales will also bring back many of the fans favorite characters such as Gyro Gearloose, Mrs. Beakley, Launchpad McQuack and many others. The senior vice president of programming and general manager of Disney XD, Marc Buhaj stated that the program had a special place in the history of animation for Disney television. In the statement that was released, Buhaj made the promise that the new series would not only have the same adventurous spirit, but also the same type of energy that the original show offered.
The original production of Ducktales was the lead off for the popular Disney Afternoon, which was a block of original animated Disney programming. There was even a theatrical film that was released in 1990, DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.
While fans eagerly await the Disney reboot of the animated DuckTales, old episodes from the original series are still available for viewing. The original show is available via the app, Watch Disney Channel.
