Leonard Nimoy, best known for his role in Star Trek, has been hospitalized with chest pains, according to reports. Fans and fellow actors have taken to social media to wish their best for him, with George Takai leading. According to TMZ, he was taken to UCLA Medical Center on Thursday, and remains in hospital now.

Nimoy is best known for his role of Spock, on Star Trek: The Original Series. He has appeared in six movies since, with the latest adaptations included. Over the last few months, the 82-year-old has been in and out of hospital due to chest pains and is suffering from a lung disease.

Despite quitting smoking 30 years ago, Nimoy revealed last month that he has a serious lung disease. It was devastating for fans to hear. He took to social media to say that he did not quit smoking soon enough, and is suffering from COPD. He urged his fans to quit smoking right now, so they could “live long and prosper” in the words of his infamous character.

COPD—also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease—causes the airways to narrow, making breathing very difficult. It is often caused by smoking, and leads to coughing and regular chest infections. It does get worse over time, and Nimoy is struggling with it now. Just recently, he was seen with an oxygen cylinder as he was wheeled around JFK airport.

Nimoy retired officially in 2010, but has since been seen on small and big screens. He reprised his role as Spock for the new movies, playing a future version of his character. He was also in Fringe, playing Dr. William Bell in 2012.

Nimoy has now been hospitalized with chest pains again, and many people are worried. There has not been a comment from his representatives at this time, leading to many taking to Twitter to share their hopes that he will make a full recovery. Takai led the good wishes posts on Facebook for Nimoy, and is at the top of his trending feed.

Nimoy has focused on giving back to the community over the years. Using his celebrity status, he not only encourages people to quit smoking but also to stand up against bullies online. It is a difficult subject, and one that has come to light much more over recent years.

The actor was in his home at the time of suffering chest pains. Nimoy called 911, and paramedics were instantly at his home. They were so worried that they wanted to get him to a doctor right away. It shows just how serious the matter for Nimoy is.

Despite his illness, fans have seen him around a lot. He regularly appears at Star Trek conventions and fandom gatherings. His fans clearly mean the world to him, and helped his character become the iconic one that it is today. He refuses to let his illness beat him down, and is clearly focused on living life to the full. However, it appears that COPD could be winning as Nimoy has been hospitalized with severe chest pains again.
