Confederate FlagJoe Morton made a guest appearance on Comedy Central’s Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore and wasted no time getting into full character as Scandal’s Papa Pope. The Nightly Show provides viewers with Larry Wilmore’s distinct point of view and comedic take on current events and pop culture. Hosted by Emmy Award-winning Wilmore, the series features a diverse panel of voices which provide a unique perspective on the current state of the world.

For more than 25 years, Wilmore has been busy as a TV producer, comedian, writer, director, and actor. During a recent episode on his current late-night show, accompanied by Rory Albanese, Naomi Ekperigin, and Joe Morton the panel discussed racism, South Carolina, and the Confederate flag. Not long after the conversation ensued, Wilmore turned to Morton and asked how Papa Pope would handle the Confederate flag issue.

Morton jumped right into character as Papa Pope from the hit series Scandal to address the ongoing Confederate flag controversy.  To his credit, Morton said he could only guess how Papa Pope would address the issue.  He then looked directly into the camera and stated:

You are some funny, funny people. For you it is always summertime and the living is easy. Your daddy is rich and your mama is good-looking. You are a Confederate, a proud, southern white boy with your Bible in your hand and your shotgun in your pickup truck. A Southern white boy with the shame of slavery running through your veins. YOU ARE A BIGOT!

I am a black man. I have worked and scraped for every inch of dirt I walk on. You, on the other hand, cried yourself to sleep because Lincoln hurt your feelings. You backwoods, sheet wearing, cross burning h***y Motherf****er. You lose the war and all you want to do is make my people pay for it. You think you love this country, but what you love is the corruption of the red, white and blue you call valor. What you love is the satisfaction that mess brings when you feel people need to bring that flag some credence like it stands for something more than hate.

Y’all fighting about whether to tear it down from the top of your state building or not… YOU ARE A BIGOT… and I am disappointed in the way you treat my country.

Morton is known for his supporting role on the series Scandal. His character is Rowan Pope, the father of the star of the show Olivia Pope. He also goes by the name Elijah Pope and is the character people love to hate. His no-nonsense demeanor and “commanding” voice keeps viewers on edge wondering what he will do next. Since his debut in the last portion of the season’s second series, Morton has been a regular, supporting character in many of the episodes.

In addition to being a television, film, and theater actor, the 67-year-old is also a singer and songwriter. He is best known for his roles in movies such as The Brother from Another Planet, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Eureka. Morton has won an Emmy Award and two Image Awards among several nominations.

Many viewers stated how proud Shonda Rhimes must be of his recent rendition of Papa Pope on the Nightly News. Although humorous, the points Morton made during the nearly two-minute monologue were thought-provoking. Unfortunately, there are still several citizens who refuse to accept the underlining truth the Confederate flag represents within the African-American community. Scandal’s Papa Pope slammed those in support of the controversial Confederate flag.
