One of the Original Kings of Comedy, D.L. Hughley, insulted the transgender Queen Caitlyn Jenner at the recent ESPYS Awards Show on July 17. Hughley roasted the Olympic gold winner in an on air interview with TMZ. The Unapologetic star ripped Jenner over her looks and unearned award.
Jenner let her hair down so to speak to the world publicly, during a Vanity Fair cover shoot earlier this year. During the interview with Vanity Fair, Jenner announced that the wait was over, and presented herself as Ms. Caitlyn Jenner. In the notorious radio interview, Hughley criticized ESPN’s decision to give the coveted Arthur Ashe Courage Award to the realty TV star. In the interview, Hughley joked,”She is a beautiful woman,” then sarcastically whipped his answer to”no,” then went on to roasting Jenner.
Hughley was disappointed at the fact that Caitlyn was being compared to the late tennis humanitarian Arthur Ashe, who the award was named after. Hughley said, “He fought for Aids with dignity and honor and Jenner just put on a dress.” Many attendees and viewers were surprised that the award did not go to the women’s basketball star Lauren Hill. Lauren Hill fought inoperable brain cancer, and raised millions of dollars to raise cancer awareness. In April 10,2015, the courageous hero that played for Mount St.Joseph, lost her battle with cancer at the young age of 19.
The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, is an award that has become the staple for bravery on the ESPYS Award show. Even though it is a sports award, it is not limited to sports related people or actions. The award has been bestowed to sport humanitarians like Muhammed Ali, Billy Jean King, and Michael Sam. Sam, who was the last athlete to receive the award before Jenner, was praised for his bravery as one of college football’s first openly self acknowledged gay players. D.L.Hughley insulting the transgender Queen, Jenner, was a blow to Courage. While many have criticized Espn’s decision to award the Olympic Gold medalist, Jenner, has kept her head up, spreading her story of her transformation and bravery throughout the Gay community.
Caitlyn’s courage did not begin with her physical metamorphosis as a woman. In 1976, the former college football player won the decathlon, gaining her fame as an “All American Hero.” Jenner also set the world record of 8,524 points at a track meet in 1975, and won a gold medal in another decathlon in 1976. A historic achievement that slipped Hughley’s slap stick. The Jenner family stood together and supported the transgender hero, and his ex-wife, Kris Jenner applauded the athletes speech at the award ceremony. The former Olympian said,” Trans people deserve something vital, they deserve respect.” He also said, “.that if anyone wanted to call him names, or make jokes, it was okay because he can take it.”
Hughley was not the only celebrity to insult the transgender queen, Jenner. Peter Berg, the director of Lone Survivor, posted an image on Facebook that showed Jenner with a U.S. Army Veteran. The director said, “One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other that traded two balls for boobs.”He later said that he was a strong supporter of Jenner and the equality of transpeople everywhere. The comedian attacked Jenner’s transformation, saying that she looked like Ms.Doubtfire. Caitlyn Jenner has yet to respond to the comedian’s jokes, which should also earn the brave gold medalist an award for Class.
