In 2017, Kanye West was clinically diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This condition is characterized by significant changes in mood and energy, from emotional highs to devastating lows. After learning of the rapper’s diagnosis, many fans received some sort of clarity for his behavior variations. Without question, YE, as he now calls himself, is a talented and gifted musician, however, some of his more recent choices have caused his fan base to waiver. As the story of his current reality unfolds, it seems that Kanye continues to play Russian roulette with his health.
People with bipolar disorder are at elevated risk of substance abuse and suicide and are often prescribed medication to help control the episodes. The producer admitted to drastically reducing the dosage of medication he has been prescribed whenever he deems it necessary. This according to many doctors is a recipe for disaster.
YE has often mentioned experiences with depression and anxiety in his music, giving his fans a window into some of the demons that he has battled for years. The “FML” lyricist’s issues run deep. This is why Mr. West needs to make sure he is taking his prescribed dose of medication; too much or too little could be deadly. On the track referenced above from his most recent album, “The Life of Pablo,” he raps:
One last thing I need to let you know. You ain’t never seen nothing crazier than this n***a when he off his Lexapro. Remember that last time in Mexico? Remember that last time, the episode?
Reportedly, those close to the singer are telling him how important it is for him to return to his prescribed dosage. In his current state, the 41-year-old is not doing well and as many have witnessed, not make much sense these days. However, YE believes he is doing just fine because he has found support in President Trump, who he publicly called his hero.
During his unhinged monologue at the White House, Kanye stated he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, but believes he will develop dementia because of his sleep deprivation. Kanye has refused to continue his medication while playing Russian roulette with his health.
During Kanye’s formative years in the music industry, it became clear to fans and critics alike that the rapper had extreme views of himself and does not shy away from verbal confrontation. He would go off on irrational tangents such as the ever famous “Taylor Swift VMA” fiasco. While everyone viewed Kanye as a musical genius, many resented him for being so arrogant and vocal about it.
In the summer of 2018, YE decided it was time to reveal to the world the inner workings of his mind through lyrics found in his new album, YE (name of his alter ego). The album contains lyrics about illness along with a clearly notated message about his diagnosis for listeners:
That’s my superpower, n***a, ain’t no disability!
I’m a superhero! I’m a superhero!
While the businessman is a very successful musician, he also has a serious medical condition that needs to be treated. There are many who suffer from this mental illness and now, it carries much less of a stigma than it did decades ago. Much of the musician’s behavior makes sense if one takes his condition into account. Kanye describes having manic episodes while being extremely creative. However, he is making matters worse by playing Russian roulette with his health.
