Penny Marshall, the actress, producer, and pioneering director died on December 17, 2018, at her home in the Hollywood Hills, California. She was 75 years old.
The news publication TMZ obtained a copy of her death certificate that listed the primary cause of her death was heart failure. Also listed was complications stemming from Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. There was no illegal drugs or alcohol found in her system.
The paperwork also stated that the actress was cremated and her sister Ronny Marshall was given her remains.
At the time of the actress’ death, a family spokesperson stated that the family was heartbroken over the death of Marshall.
Marshall made history as becoming the first woman to have directed a major motion picture that earned more than $100 million. She directed the Tom Hanks Smash ‘Big’ that went on to earn $8.2 million on its opening weekend and went on to gross $116 million in the U.S. and over $151 million worldwide.
After she directed the movie ‘A League of Their Own,’ Marshall was granted the title of being the worst woman who has directed two films that grossed $100 million at the U.S. box office. The movie also starred Tom Hanks. ‘A League of Their Own’ which was released in 1992, and also starred Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty, and Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, was released on July 1, 1992, and grossed $13.2 million, finishing behind ‘Batman Returns.’
It went on to make $107.5 million in the U.S., and worldwide $132.4 million, costing only $40 million to film.
Marshall was a Bronx, New York and was best known as her character Laverne DeFazio in the smash television sitcom ‘Laverne & Shirley’ first aired January 27, 1976.
She was survived by her daughter Tracy Reiner, her older sister Ronny Hallin and
Marshall, who was born on Oct. 15, 1943, had a brother actor/director Gary Marshall who died on July 19, 2016.
The Bronx native initially rose to fame in the Seventies as Laverne DeFazio in the sitcom Laverne & Shirley.
She is survived by her daughter Tracy Reiner, an actor, as well as her older sister and three grandchildren – Spencer, Bella, and Viva.
