DolphinDolphinaris Arizona announced, on Feb. 7, 2019, they would be voluntarily closing their facility starting Feb. 8. They did this after a fourth dolphin died in less than two years.

Dolphinaris released an email stating that some employees were laid off before the closure while some will remain to help care for the animals and help with the inspections. All remaining dolphins will be transferred out of the facility permanently. The Noelani and Liko, the animals, loaned by Dolphin Quest will be returned. It is unclear which facility will receive the remaining dolphins during the inspection.

Conservation Biologist Yaiyr Astudillo-Scalia said that Dolphinaris has been preparing to move the animals out of Arizona. He also said it is common not to inform the public where the animals are shipped, and usually, it happens at night when there are no protestors.

PETA has been protesting the facility demanding it is closed permanently, and the remaining animals are sent quickly to a seaside sanctuary.

A spokesperson for Dolphinaris said that they do not know how long the facility will be closed, and it will depend on the results of the inspection and what is found.
