The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has suspended both the lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor for their participation in the brawl during the UFC 229 matchup, according to USA Today on Jan. 29, 2019.
McGregor was suspended for six months and Nurmagomedov, The Eagle, was suspended nine. The NSAC sentence is retroactive to the Oct. 6, 2018 Fight Card, which occurred at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. McGregor will return on April 6. It will be October before Nurmagomedov returns.
To top that, NSAC fined Mcgregor $50,000, whereas, Nurmagomedov must fork over $500,000. Funds will be collected from the $1 million purse yet to be released.
NSAC officials delivered the decisions on Tuesday as part of the settlement agreements which McGregor had been previously prepared.
Nurmagomedov may not return until the fall after a self-imposed hiatus away from the competition to honor Ramadan. The holy month of fasting for Muslims goes from May 5 to June 4 this year.
His suspension and his religious break from competition will extend his time absent from the octagon.
The Reason Behind the Suspension
Nurmagomedov kicked off the brawl at the UFC 229 with a flying act from the top of the cage. The Eagle leaped on Dillon Danis, McGregor’s corner man.
On another note, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov, The Eagle’s cornermen were suspended for their roles, and they each received a one year sentence.
The NSAC suspension allowed them to keep their careers rather than be terminated based on the assault to non-fighters.
