On April 1, 2019, 22-year-old Lewis Chanel was found guilty in the retrial that centered around the murder of a young woman who went out for a jog in Queens, New York over two years ago.
The jury had reached a verdict in the retrial of a 22-year-old man accused of murdering a young woman when she went out for a run in her Queens neighborhood more than two years ago.
The retrial consisted of evidence and information not presented to the jury in the first trial, new allegations and testimony were brought to light during this trial.
Attorneys for Chanel asked for new hearings on April 1 due to an anonymous letter they received which suggests there may be another suspect.
Prosecutors said the letter was a way to derail the trial. The first trial ended in a mistrial in November 2018 with a hung jury.
The NYPD released on April 1, a statement saying that the case was investigated thoroughly, and the evidence shows the person responsible for Vetrano’s death is Lewis.
Despite DNA of Lewis at the scene and a confession, the first trial in November ended with the hung jury. In the second trial, Vetrano’s mother took the stand to testify against Lewis.
Cathie Vetrano said under oath, and she last saw her daughter when she returned home after undergoing a procedure at Sloan Kettering Hospital.
She told the jury that when she saw her daughter dead, she started screaming in the street.
Vetrano was raped and strangled when jogging blocks from her house.
The defense argued there were problems with the DNA. Lewis’ family states he did not kill Vetrano.
