Democrat Rep. Colin Allred intends to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024. In the May 3 announcement video, he challenges the Senator’s record, particularly his “me first” method of governing: “I’m running for [the] U.S. Senate because Texans deserve a Senator whose team is Texas. Ted Cruz only cares about himself.”

Additionally, the Representative compared his and the Senator’s actions during the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, and Cruz’s so-called winter vacation debacle the following month. Allred also told viewers: “We don’t have to be embarrassed by our Senator — We can [elect] a new one. I’ve taken down a lot tougher guys than Ted Cruz.” But, of course, as a former NFL veteran and civil rights attorney, he has the bone fides to back up that declaration.

Allred was first elected to Congress in 2018. The former Tennessee Titans linebacker defeated the incumbent Republican in the Dallas-area race for Texas Congressional District 32. He beat Jeff Sessions in one of the most competitive races in Texas, 52.2% to 45.9%.

A Texas Monthly report dated Jan. 17, 2019, indicated that then-freshman Representative Allred secured three committee assignments: Veterans’ Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and Transportation and Infrastructure.

About Rep. Colin Allred

In the video below, Allred, a three-term Congressman, said: “Some people say a Democrat can’t win in Texas.” Then, after a beat, he added: “Well, someone like me was never supposed to get this far.” While that is likely true, this Congressman conquered the challenges of growing up Black in Dallas.

The Representative is a fourth-generation Texan raised by a single mother who never knew his father. As a result, Allred’s family values led him to become the first Congress member to take paid paternity leave in 2019 publically. He also took time after his second son’s birth in 2021. Allred is a vocal proponent of national paid family leave.
