They Want to Ignore the Facts

The NRA and its members would love to tell you that today’s tragedy (12/14/2012), the senseless murder of 20 children ages 5-10, and 6 adults who were faculty at the elementary school, is not because almost anyone can buy a handgun or assault rifle in the United States. And they are telling you that. And they are liars and a group of ignorant profiteers.
Mother Jones has given us some facts, not fantasies. Since 1982, there have been 61 mass murders carried out with firearms. These occurred in 30 states.
“Of the 139 guns possessed by the killers, more than three quarters were obtained legally. The arsenal included dozens of assault weapons and semiautomatic handguns. (See charts below.) Just as Jeffrey Weise used a .40-caliber Glock to massacre students in Red Lake, Minnesota, in 2005, so too did James Holmes (along with an AR-15 assault rifle) when blasting away at his victims in a darkened movie theater”, in Aurora, Colorado.
‘Mother Jones’ listed the killers: “Just under half of the cases involved school or workplace shootings (11 and 19, respectively); the other 31 cases took place in locations including shopping malls, restaurants, government buildings, and military bases. Forty three of the killers were white males. Only one of them was a woman. (See Goleta, Calif., in 2006.) The average age of the killers was 35, though the youngest among them was a mere 11 years old. (See Jonesboro, Ark., in 1998.)”
These mass murders were committed with the use of semi-automatic handguns in the majority, assault weapons were next, followed by revolvers, and lastly by shotguns.
Wives and girlfriends are more likely to be killed if there is a handgun in the house. Family members are in more danger in general if the man of the house is in possession of a firearm. Handguns have been proven to be an ineffective weapon used in home protection. The fact is, handguns are produced to kill people, period.
I phoned my daughter in Florida today. She was in tears. My granddaughters are 5 and 7. She home schools them for many reasons, one being the dangerous situation in her area. Her mother-in-law had called her after she saw the tragedy on television and said, “Thank you for home schooling my granddaughters”.
When it comes to our guns, we are a nation in denial. The NRA has brainwashed millions of Americans in believing that they have a right to own handguns or assault rifles based on the second amendment. They are stretching the truth, and at times telling blatant lies. Read it and consider the times when it was drafted. Understand how it doesn’t apply to the weapons and conditions we have today.
Please, all you gun “enthusiasts”, just once in your narrow little lives, use your intelligence and not your emotions.

@netznetz Oh my God are you kidding me? If you don’t have access to a gun, alcohol probably isn’t going to end another’s life…that’s the point. If a drunk can just pick up a gun and shoot…then that IS the problem. These aren’t monsters for the most part…they are mentally ill people who had access to guns! Hello?!?! Wake up! We don’t need all these guns in our society, we just don’t. We are the only country in the civilized world where you can walk around with a damn gun in your pocket. Children are being taken to firing ranges for fun. We live in a guns are fun society and the truth is…we are spoiled brats about fire arms and many other things that are destroying our society.
Well that was an intelligent emotionless response to his situation.

I would ask you to do the same.
No one raises the same outrage about alcohol, oil, child abuse, etc. All topics that you can have an immediate local impact. You refuse to acknowledge there’s a monster that committed the crimes regardless of the instrument used. For some reason it’s a gun crime, but not an alcohol crime or car crime. Those crimes are rightfully directed at the one that caused the murder.
No abolition on any of the other items that are the instruments of the killer. Inconsistency and prejudice. No reasoning. Get back to blaming the person not the instrument like you do for everything else.
You fear is personal. Yo have a choice to keep and bear arms. Don’t take my rights away because of what you fear.
