2013 ,I should say, is Leonardo DiCaprio’s year. Let’s celebrate! This guy just can’t get enough, having three movies in a row out this year. One is the recent summer hit “ The Great Gatsby”, there was “Django Unchained” and another upcoming lavish lifestyle flick, “The Wolf of Wall Street” due this Fall. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese and also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Kyle Chandler, Jean Dujardin, Rob Reiner and Margot Robbie.
This is based on the true story of a real life stockbroker Jordan Belfort who committed stock market fraud and spent 22 months in jail. His aggressive nature earned him a name as the “wolf of wall street. The 26-year-old stockbroker with his aggressive composure boldly make a statement in the opening trailer shown this week, “ The year I turned 26, I made $49 million, which really pissed me off because it was three shy of a million a week.”
What a statement! Whoa!
Who is Jordan Belfort?
Jordan Belfort is born into a Jewish Home in New York. He founded the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont which functioned as a boiler room and developed a lavish lifestyle. The company employed over 1000 stockbrokers and was involved in stock issues totaling to more than $1 billion. Facts based on Wikepedia.
The story is based on Belfort’s memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, first published in 2007. It tells the story of the stockbroker’s rise to riches. It is said that his memoir is a “must to read” as it includes his lifestyle of cocaine, prostitutes and other beyond your imagination adventure.
Leo and Martin:
It seems that Scorsese favorite lead actor is DiCaprio with a long list of movies collaborated together to include “ The Departed”, “The Aviator”, “Shutter Island”. In “The Aviator” DiCaprio got an Academy award nomination in a lead role for his portrayal of Howard Hughes, a psychological case character who wanted to have fame in the Tinseltown Hollywood. In the trailer, DiCaprio is caught saying his lines, “ We were making so much money that we didn’t know what to do with it.”
On the other hand, with the newest collaboration of Scorcese and DiCaprio, will this movie makes it to the Oscars? It’s been two years since Scorsese almost made it in the film, “Hugo”. Well, others say that it’s too early to predict since trailers alone is not the yardstick to gauge for an academy award. But given a very good film material, there is no doubt that the Wolf of Wall Street will make it to next year’s award giving body. With DiCaprio lists of memorable performances and the filmaker’s style, no doubt about it!
To add credibility to Scorsese’s brilliance as a filmmaker, producer Riza Azis had this to say, “ Everything about this film plays to Martin Scorsese’s genius and visionary storytelling. At its heart, “The Wolf of Wall Street” is about the rise of new modern gangsters in New York. Wall Street gangsters that redefined excess, greed and arrogance. We’re excited to see Mr. Scorsese take the reins of this visceral, tumultuous ride.”
Will the “Wolf of Wall Street” make it big in the box office? Predictably yes, aside from the collaboration of DiCaprio and Scorsese, worth to watch also is Matthew McConaughey and the soundtrack of Kanya West’s “Black Skinhead” from his album “Yeezus.” Well, it’s for us to find out this Fall on it’s playdate November 15.
Twenty four hours after the launched of the official trailer, the Wolf of Wall Street has received almost 1.2 million hits in You Tube. To Leonardo DiCaprio… Let’s celebrate!
Now this is something to look forward to. See you at the Movies.
