The Arkansas actor/writer/director and musician Billy Bob Thornton has donned his director’s hat for the sixth time as he takes a look back in time on his film Jayne Mansfield’s car. Angelina Jolie’s ex-husband not only directed the film, but he took on a lead role as well. We’ have the film trailer below for your viewing pleasure.
The eccentric artist, who famously wore a vial of Angelina Jolie’s blood around his neck when the two were married, shows that he’s learned a lot from his previous five directorial efforts.
Boasting an impressive cast, Thornton, Kevin Bacon, Ray Stevenson, John Hurt, Robert Duvall, Tipi Hedren, Frances O’Conner, Robert Patrick and Shawnee Smith, the film looks like it will be an ensemble piece of the highest quality. Thornton obviously had no problem getting character actors of the highest calibre for his most recent film.
The 57 year-old performer has always been known for his personal quirks and eccentricities. He seems to have used these to flesh out a film that has an abundance of eccentric characters. In the film he merges the occupants of two different countries; bringing the American south and the United Kingdom together in a clash of cultures.
The main plotline of the film appears to be this cultural interaction and the complexities of a 1960s southern dynasty with all its intricacies. An interaction of separate worlds that could mirror the “chalk and cheese” marriage of Thornton and Jolie.
Billy Bob and Jolie got married in 2000 and divorced in 2003. The couple relationship could be described as turbulent and at the same time deep. Both were very enamoured with each other and they got tattoos of their partners name. After their breakup, Jolie got Thornton’s name lasered off and Thornton turned his “button mushroom” tattoo of Angelina turned into “angel.”
Billy Bob Thornton’s look back at a simpler time with Jayne Mansfield’s Car sees him looking back at a time before Angelina Jolie and before he began his long climb to film success. His theme of opposites clashing must remind him of his ex relationship with one of the sexiest women alive.
The marriage of the LA girl whose father Jon Voight was already considered Hollywood royalty to the Arkansas actor who’d clawed his way up the film ladder was a turgid affair that managed to stay in the headlines the whole time they were married.
Jolie was a very hot property after working in The Bone Collector, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider respectively. Thornton was working steadily and his work in Bandits would elevate his status.
But now, Billy Bob Thornton has a new film out that he’s directed and starred in and more news, hot off the press, is that he will star in the small screen adaptation of the Coen Brothers 1996 film Fargo.
FX network head John Landgraf announced on Friday that Thornton has been signed up to play a character on the “limited” series that will be based on the 1996 black comedy-crime film by the Coens. The television version of Fargo has been initially scheduled for a 10 episode slot in FX in 2014.
The Oscar winning actor will play a drifting con artist. According to FX there will be not be any characters from the big screen version of the film in the series. Fans of Frances McDormand will, no doubt, be disappointed.
Apparently, the new series will still be “remarkably true to the film.” The Coen Brothers are associated with the FX series.
Billy Bob Thornton has never reached the heights of popularity that his ex Angelina Jolie has enjoyed, but his star hasn’t diminished too badly. His sixth turn as director for Jayne Mansfield’s Car shows that he can look back and do it very well. His southern background seems to have enabled him to clearly depict the south that he grew up in.
