Lindsay Lohan’s character in The Canyons says something to the effect that she’s just not into movies any more. As a parallel to Lohan’s real life, it has the shattering clarity of realism. Given that the 27 year-old actress has gotten rave reviews for her hosting the Chelsea Lately talk show and a lackluster reception from her latest film performance perhaps she’s not into movies any more either.

Apparently Lohan had the audience in the palm of her manicured hand. Considering that she just got out of rehab and is staying with a “sober coach” she did a pretty good job filling in for host Chelsea Handler. Although the show won’t “air” until next week, the available “clips” from the pre-recorded program show a relaxed, flippant Lohan.

She seems to be enjoying herself as she makes fun of Twilight star Kristen Stewart and One-Direction’s Harry Styles. Talking about Stewarts recent rant about the paparazzi, Lohan says, “I’m just excited that Kristen Stewart finally showed some emotion.” She then goes on to say, “I really like [Kristen], I think she’s awesome.”

Then with a comic timing that’s admirable, she finishes with, “Of course [Kristen] hates photographers. They caught a picture of her kissing a married man in a Mini Cooper!”

While the audience found the joke very funny, we’re not sure if Stewart will be sending any Christmas cards Lohan’s way this year. Kristen would probably prefer not to be reminded of being photographed “mid-clinch” with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, and paramour, Rupert Sanders.

Lindsay continues on her cue card driven monologue and jokes about Harry Styles’ denial of his alleged bisexuality. With a nod and a wink to her own past sexuality, she says, “Harry Styles was on the cover of British GQ. He was questioned by the interviewer about the rumors that he’s bisexual with a DJ named Nick.”

She nods and says, “I’ve been there, I have.” She finishes with, “He answered, ‘We’re just friends.’ When asked how many people he’s slept with, Harry said, ‘Yes, lower than 50. You’re cornering me. I’ve only ever had sex with two people.'” After a very short pause she drives the joke home, “Yeah, he’s never hung out with The Wanted and he’s obviously not counting oral.”

According to a source, Lohan was pleased with the way it all went. The source said, “She said she felt really good. And she was polite to everyone, thanked the whole crew. She was on time, hit her marks, and was very funny. The audience loved her!”

So it looks like Lindsay Lohan’s guest hosting of Chelsea Lately went much better than her efforts in her latest film.

So what’s happening?

Has Lindsay gotten burned out on acting at the tender age of 27? The film’s “soft open” has brought mostly mixed reviews and only a few have waxed lyrical about Ms Lohan’s performance. Many reviewers have said that she just “drifted in and out of scenes” and that the film itself didn’t “sell” well.

Whether the problem was with director Paul Schrader’s direction or Brett Easton Ellis’ script or with Lohan’s being strung out (the film was made pre-rehab) isn’t clear. Despite Schrader’s assertions that working with Lohan was “a dream,” the actress was fired on the first day of filming.

Apparently she was late on the first day and Schrader made sure that his $100 a-day actress understood that tardiness was not acceptable. There was also the issue of Lohan not wanting to do a contracted nude scene. Which is a bit puzzling. In the past, Lohan hasn’t had any problems taking her kit off. Although she is now that little bit older and perhaps not so happy to “show it all” for the camera – and crew.

At least on Chelsea Lately she could keep her clothes on and her guest hosting allowed her to let her “sober” nimble brain take over. She certainly does a more than capable job as Chelsea Handler’s temporary replacement. Much better than her pre-rehab performance in her latest film. Perhaps she can carve out a new career.
