According to CNN, a suspect believed to be responsible for shooting and murdering a church pastor, whilst he was preaching in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has been arrested.
Local sheriff’s deputies detained a 53-year-old male, named Woodrow Karey, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Witnesses attending the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center claimed Karey had stormed into the building, around 8:20 p.m. on Friday night, and fired two shots into Pastor Ronald Harris.
According to sheriff’s spokesperson Kim Myers, Karey, who was a church deacon, telephoned the police and confessed to shooting the pastor. Karey then elected to flee the scene of the crime on foot. For reasons unknown, he then called the sheriff’s office and offered his unconditional surrender.
During the man’s arrest, he cooperated with the deputies fully, even directing them to the location of two firearms, which he had disposed of in the woods.
The shooting came as a surprise, as Karey has no known criminal convictions. Furthermore, the police are yet to establish a motive for the act of brutality.
Speaking to CNN, the pastor’s tearful daughter had nothing but praise for her father:
“My dad was a great father. He was an awesome grandfather. He was an awesome preacher-teacher. He had a big heart. He loved everybody, wanted to always help.”
Meanwhile, police officials are still investigating the motive for the attack.
