Breast Cancer Prevention Through Foods

Breast cancer prevention through healthy foods isn’t exactly a new idea.  Research has shown that eating a diet that is primarily plant-based will provide you with plenty of nutrients that your body needs in order to stay healthy.  And it will help to keep your weight in check, which is another added bonus.

Research has shown that there are several nutritious foods that are key in reducing your risk of breast cancer.

Some people can’t even think of starting the day without a cup of coffee.  The great news is that it’s good for you.  Coffee is rich in antioxidants that can protect cells from cancer causing damage.  In fact, drinking coffee on a regular basis could actually lower your risk of an aggressive form of breast cancer.

Oatmeal is proven to be high in fiber and low in cholesterol.  Another great source of antioxidants.  The fiber in oatmeal helps “soak up” estrogen that is circulating through the blood stream.  Research has shown that by simply adding as little as 10 grams of fiber to your daily diet your risk of developing breast cancer may be reduced by up to 7 percent.

Vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower contain indole-3 carbinol, a substance that has been found to have protective properties in certain cancers.  Another benefit of cruciferous veggies is through glucosinolates, which help eliminate carcinogens from the body.

Seaweed is another powerhouse cancer fighter. Both the brown and red varieties contain trace minerals, such as iodine,  that have proven to be very effective in promoting breast health.  High in calcium seaweed can actually inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Certain fish, such as cod, haddock, and salmon, are high in omega-3 fatty acids.  Eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids helps support your immune system and can lower a woman’s risk of both diabetes and heart disease.  However, The American Cancer Society cautions that diets high in fat can often lead to obesity.  Best to eat these in moderation.

Diets that are rich in whole grains have been shown to boost life expectancy in some breast cancer patients.  The high fiber found in whole grains helps control your appetite and will decrease the amount of calories you consume.  Managing a healthy weight is key in breast cancer prevention.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered that piperine (a compound that is found in black pepper) and curcurmin (one of the main ingredients in turmeric)  have reduced the growth of breast cancer causing cells.  The anti-inflammatory qualities of both pepper and turmeric offer a great way to add flavor to food without adding additional fat or calories.

Diets that contain foods with healing properties are just one step in preventing breast cancer.  It is also suggested that you switch to free-range, hormone-free organic foods such as meat and dairy and reduce your processed food consumption.  Adding certain supplements can also be beneficial.

Breast cancer prevention through certain foods is one way to stay healthy.  Switching to organic, fiber rich foods and adopting a more active lifestyle is also a step in the right direction.
