American Music Awards 2013 (Review)

American Music Awards 2013

The 41st American Music Awards are a way to honor the best singers and musical acts of the past year. This year, the show will be held on Sunday, November 24, at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Pitbull will be the host, and some of today’s hottest musical acts will be performing live, such as Katy Perry, who will open the show by singing “Unconditionally.”

I have made predictions of who will be the winners in each category. Have you done the same? If so, match up your choices and compare them with mine, and we’ll see who has the best percentage of selecting the winners in each category!

For example, in the category of the American Music Awards Artist of the Year, I chose Justin Timberlake to be the winner. However, all of the performers nominated for this award are very talented. The other people nominated were Macklemore & Lewis, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift.

Katy Perry’s performance opened with her behind what looked like a Japanese paper wall. She was dressed up in a kimono as she sang, and the other dancers on the stage were also dressed in Japanese-style clothing. The stage set was pretty elaborate and cool, with a Japanese theme. It looked pretty cool, but I have never heard the song before, and I couldn’t make out many of the words to it. The audience clapped enthusiastically, and gave her a standing ovation.

Pitbull came out onstage, and again, everyone got on their feet and applauded. He was looking pretty stylish, dressed up in a tuxedo. He said: “What you’re lookin’ at right now is the epitome of the American Dream.”

Pitbull said that last year, it was “all about Gangnam Style,” while this year, “it’s about twerking.” He had female dancers demonstrate dance moves that he siad were popular back in his hometown of Miami. After that, he introduced Taylor Swift, the first presenter.

Swift was the presenter for the award Favorite Pop/Rock Artist – Male. It went to Justin Timberlake! Also nominated for this award were Bruno Mars, and Robin Thicke. I chose Justin to win this award — so far, I’m 1 for 1. It’s his fifth American Music Award ever. The American public voted for the winners tonight.

Emma Roberts from American Horror Story introduced the next act to perform, One Direction. They sang their hit “The Story of My Life.” they sang this song just last Thursday on The X Factor — it’s a great song. It’s from their second album of this year — the women in the audience screamed at various points in the song.

Then, Ariana Grande took the stage to sing her hit,  Tattooed Heart. She was dressed in a beautiful, floor-length, shimmering red dress. She looked very classy and lovely, and it was a great song that hearkened back to another time. She’s one of the singers up for the New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s award — she could very well win it.

Marc Anthony and Zoe Saldana next presented the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Artist. Nominated were Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Ciara. All of these women are also extremely talented singers — I chose Rihanna to win this award. The award went to Rihanna! I’m now 2 for 2!

Imagine Dragons sang “Demons,” and then went into their hit, “Radioactive.” I love both of these songs — they are pretty awesome. The lead singer was getting very pumped up and emotional as he sang, and they had a huge drum on stage — it was a great performance. The audience applauded loudly.

Kristen Bell and Chris Daughtry introduced the next award, Favorite Album – Country.  The albums nominated are “Crash My Party” by Luke Bryan, “Red” by Taylor Swift, and “Here’s To The Good Times,” by Florida Georgia Line. I picked “Red” to win, and — it did! The award went to Taylor Swift. It’s her 12th win ever, and now I’m 3 for 3!

Michael Bolton and Akon presented the next award for Best Rap/Hip Hop Artist. The artists nominated are Lil Wayne, Jay Z, and Macklemore & Lewis. I said that Macklemore & Lewis will win — they did win! now, I’m 4 for 4.

Pitbull and Ke$sha took the stage and performed  “Timber.” It was another great performance — Pitbull was excellent! There were spinning pinwheels, all lit up like they were on fire — really cool stage set. The audience gave them a standing ovation. Justin Timberlake will perform next.

Dave Grohl and Joan Jett presented the award for Favorite Artist – Alternative Rock. The nominees were Imagine Dragons, the Lumineers, and Mumford & Sons. The award went to Imagine Dragons. I had said that they would probably win, but I went with Mumford & Sons, so this is my first incorrect prediction of the night — now, I’m 4 for 5.

Pitbull presented the award for Favorite Artist – Latin. the three nominated are Romeo Santos, Prince Royce, and Marc Anthony. I will say that Marc Anthony will win this award. The winner was Marc Anthony! That puts me at 5 for 6.

Heidi Klum next introduced Justin Timberlake, who performed a song about alcohol,  Drink You Away. It was an incredible performance! J.T. played the guitar, and there were a ton of other performers and singers on stage, an entire band. I had never heard the song before, but it was extremely cool. The entire audience rose to their feet to give him a standing ovation!

Nicole Richie and Kelly Osbourne presented the next award, for Favorite Album – Pop/Rock. The nominees were “Red” by Taylor Swift, “The 20/20 Experience” by Justin Timberlake, and “Take Me Home” by One Direction. I played the favorite here, and picked One Direction’s album to win. . The award went to One Direction! It’s their first win ever of an American Music Award. Now, i’m at 6 for 7 in my predictions.

Florida Georgia Line were the next act. They performed  “Cruise.” They did really great — it led into “Ride With Me (It Must Be The Money).” Very cool — and, unexpected, but it worked, IMHO.

The next award will be for New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s, but that will be after the commercial break, and there will probably be other acts performing before the winner of this award is announced. I chose Macklemore & Lewis.

Daisy Fuentes and Juan Pablo Galavis were the next presenters — they introduced the New Artist of the Year Award Present by Kohl’s — it went to Ariana Grande! She’s a fantastic singer, but I chose Macklemore & Lewis. They let me down, dang it — now, I’m at 6 for 8 — blah.  Still, congratulations, Ariana!

Bill Maher presented a special award, the Icon award, recognizing the contributions of Rihanna. Then, he introduced her, and she performed one of her 12 Number One songs, “Diamonds.” She is an amazing singer, and this is a great song! Rihanna wore a classy-looking long black dress.Rihanna got a standing ovation, and Jay Z appeared, courtesy of a big TV screen, presenting the award; and, Rihanna’s mom came onstage to be the actual person who handed Rihanna, 25, her Icon award. It was a nice and touching moment.

Everyone came to their feet and applauded again, and Rihanna then gave her acceptance speech. She said that, at first, she “annoyed all of her neighbours” with her voice and her singing. That was before she made her demo, began impressing people, and hit it big, of course.

Ciara and Paulina Gretzky were the next presenters. The gave the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Artist – Male. Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake, and Miguel were nominated. They’re all fantastic artists — I said that Miguel will be the winner. It went to Justin Timberlake instead, and it was his second award of the night! Now, I’m at 6 for 9, slipping fast after a great start….

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took the stage to sing their hit, “Can’t Hold Us.” They gave an excellent performance, with a fantastic stage show!

Fall Out Boy gave the award for Favorite Female Artist – Female. Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, and Taylor Swift were the nominees. I said that Carrie Underwood would take this award. However, it went to Taylor Swift! She has now won a career total of 13 American Music Awards! That brings me to a rather depressing 6 for 10 in my predictions.

After a commercial break, there was a tribute to Celia Cruz by Jennifer Lopez. She sang some of Cruz’ hit songs in Spanish. J Lo still has a rockin’ body, and she has some spectacular dance moves, as well. Ella fue muy caliente, to use a very accurate descriptive phrase! Everyone gave her a standing ovation.

Alicia Silverstone and Nathan Fillion gave the award for Single of the Year. Nominated for the award were “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line (featuring Nelly),  ”Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Lewis, and “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke. The award went to Florida Georgia Line for “Cruise,” which they sang with Nelly. I chose “Blurred Lines,” so I was incorrect in predicting the winner of this category, and I’m now at 6 for 11.

Sarah Silverman presented the award for Favorite Album – Soul/R&B. Nominated for the award were “The 20/20 Experience” by Justin Timberlake, “Unapologetic” by Rihanna, and “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke. I said that the winner will be “The 20/20 Experience” by Justin Timberlake, and — I was right! J.T. won another American Music Award! That brings my total of correct predictions so far to 7 for 11.

Jennifer Hudson introduced A Great Big World and Christine Aguilera, performing “Say Something.” What a great song! I saw them perform the song on The Voice — that was pretty awesome, as well. I’d say tonight’s performance was better, though — Christina was great, as usual.

Kendrick Lamar was the next performer. He sang “Swimming Pools (Drank).” I had never heard this song before, but it sounded pretty cool. He was very good at rapping, and he had the women in the audience on their feet and swaying. He got a standing ovation.

Austin Mahone and Kendall Jenner gave the award for Favorite Artist – Electronic Dance Music (EDM). Up for this award are Daft Punk, Avicii, Zedd, and Calvin Harris. I liked them all, but I said that Avicii would win. The award went to Avicii. It’s his first American Music Award ever! Now, I’m at 8 for 11.

Next, Lady Gaga and R. Kelly performed “Do What U Want.” They were amazing! Lady Gaga got bleeped out once, but she and R. Kelly put on an absolutely incredible performance!  It was fantastic — R. Kelly was the president, and Lady Gaga played a Marilyn Monroe-like character  — very sexy and poignant performance! Who cares about twerking after that?

The next award presented was for Favorite Male Artist – Country. The nominees are Hunter Hayes, Blake Shelton, and Luke Bryan. My prediction was that Blake Shelton will take this award. The winner was Luke Bryan — it was his second year in a row to win this award! This incorrect prediction puts me at 8 for 12, overall.

Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, Daymond John, and Robert Herjavec were the next presenters, from Shark Tank. They gave the award for Favorite Band, Duo, or Group. One Direction, Imagine Dragons, and Macklemore & Lewis were nominated. One Direction will likely win, but I said that I would go with Macklemore & Lewis to win — I might get this prediction wrong, though. The award went to One Direction! It’s their 2nd American Music Award of the night! Now, I’m at 8 for 13.

Luke Bryan performed next. He sang “That’s My Kind of Night.” He had some audience members up and dancing. It was a pretty cool performance, with interesting lighting effects onstage. The audience gave him a standing ovation.

TLC Lil Mama took the stage, and they sang “Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls.” It looked as if water was raining down upon the stage as they sang.  One of the singers started doing a rap in the middle of the song — it sounded pretty cool. Then, the audience clapped along as TLC sang.

Miley Cyrus sang “Wrecking Ball,” the last performance of the night. A projection of a giant freaking kitten with solid black eyes behind Miley mouthed the words to the song, as if it was singing along. Miley gave a very emotionally-charged performance of the song, but the kitten was kind of distracting.

Pitbull then presented the Artist of the Year award. Macklemore & Lewis, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna were nominated for this award. It went to Taylor Swift! This is the third time she won this award, and her 14th time to win an American Music Award. I chose Justin Timberlake — that put my rate at getting predictions right to 8 for 14.

There were other awards that weren’t given during the American Music Awards, but which I also made predictions on.

One was for Favorite Album  – Rap/Hip Hop. I chose “Heist” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and they won. Also, in the category of Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, I chose Maroon 5, and they won. But, I haven’t yet been able to find out the winners of a few of the other categories, like Favorite Soundtrack and Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist, for example.

Ah, well — I did better with my predictions than I thought that I would, anyway. How did you do with yours? Did your favorites win tonight on The American Music Awards show? Please leave your comments below!
