Love Won’t Keep Them Together as Captain and Tennille to Divorce
Well, despite what the song says, the shocking news of the day is, unfortunately, love won’t keep them together as Captain and Tennille are scheduled to get a divorce. The duo became a pop super couple back in the 1970s, putting out hits like the now ironically titled Love Will Keep Us Together, the rather odd ditty Muskrat Love, and the song which was always a little bit “TMI,” Do That to Me One More Time.
The couple has been married for 39 years. When contacted for a comment about the news, the Captain, whose real name is Daryl Dragon, said that he has no idea why Tennille filed for divorce and that he was still trying to figure out why it happened. A statement on the couple’s website revealed the divorce news with the following explanation:
Until Thursday, January 16th, 2014, when Toni Tennille met with a DIVORCE ATTORNEY, in Phoenix, AZ, everything relating to THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE appeared to the public as them being the ideal model for a “rock-solid’ married pair. But almost all people naturally evolve over time, & sometimes hidden feelings start to be uncovered when one may read, just a little more into (the popularized, substitute heading appearing just below), stating, for instance: `’MUSIC HAS KEPT THEM TOGETHER.”
There was no other word on what so-called “hidden feelings” contributed to the couple’s split, and no other statements have been issued by either the Captain or Tennille at this time.
They married and released their first album together in 1974. In 2007 they purchased a home together which Tennille described on her blog as “their last dream home” and the place where they would “spend the rest of their lives.” In 2010, they celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Sadly, and although neither of them may have expected it, love won’t keep them together. The shocking news that Captain and Tennille are slated to get a divorce will undoubtedly come as a major surprise for their millions of fans worldwide, who viewed the couple as one of the most solid and long-lasting teams in the entertainment industry.
In 1975 they won a Grammy for the song Love Will Keep Us Together. Since their debut in the 70s, the Captain and Tennille have released more than twenty albums including a 2013 release called Icon. While it is unconfirmed if the Captain’s health concerns contributed in any way to their upcoming divorce, Tennille revealed recently that her husband has been suffering from a debilitating neurological condition that is similar to Parkinson’s disease. Tennille wrote that the Captain has been dealing with tremors that make it impossible for him to play the piano and that any kind of stress makes his condition worse.
The couple, now in their seventies, enjoyed a prolific and successful music career with a total of five gold albums and two albums that went platinum. Sadly, as their fans struggle to accept the shocking news that love won’t keep them together, the Captain and Tennille are slated to get a divorce. While the couple will be no longer, their music will endure forever.
