Burger King Baby Meets Her Mother

Burger King BabyKatheryn Deprill, dubbed the Burger King Baby, 27, was reunited with her biological mother after a short search on Facebook. Deprill was left in a Burger King bathroom when she was just hours old. Wanting to know more about her biological family, Deprill posted a picture of herself holding a sign that explained her story on Facebook. Three weeks later the Burger King baby was able to meet her mother.

Deprill would not disclose the identity of her biological mother because her mother did not want the attention. She did say that the Facebook photo, which was shared more than 30,000 times, was seen by her mother almost immediately, but that her mother was too nervous to know what to do at first.

After meeting with her mother, who Deprill described as better than she imagined, Deprill was able to know more about her own identity. Deprill learned that her biological mother was raped when she was traveling abroad. Abortion was not an option for the mother. Telling her parents was also not an option, so the pregnancy was kept a secret.

On September 15, 1986 Deprill’s mother gave birth, and left her baby just a few hours later in a Burger King restaurant, not knowing she would meet her years later. Burger King workers found Deprill in the bathroom, wrapped in a sweatshirt with her umbilical cord still attached. Deprill’s mother was 17 at the time.

Deprill decided to search for her mother earlier this month when she was troubled by questions from doctors regarding her family’s medical history. Deprill’s mother said that she had also just recently began searching for her daughter.

John Waldron is the attorney who helped to facilitate the meeting between the Burger King baby and her mother. Deprill and her mother met in his office on Monday in Allentown, Pa. Waldron noted that there was a strong resemblance between the two women. Deprill said that it was like, “looking in a mirror.”

Deprill said that the meeting started with a hug, which “broke the ice.” She went on to describe how happy she is, and how amazing her biological mother is. Deprill said her mother was extremely upset about leaving the infant Deprill at a Burger King bathroom, but felt that she had no other option. Waldron pointed out that it was a different time then saying, “Back then you couldn’t just go to a hospital and drop the baby off, no questions asked.” He said that the mother kissed Deprill on the forehead, and left her in the bathroom.

The first meeting between the reunited daughter and mother lasted four hours. Deprill said they plan to meet again and is positive that they will have a relationship. Deprill is an EMT. She is married and has three children. Deprill’s adoptive mother and her seven-month-old son were also present at the first meeting. Deprill stated about her mother that, “She left me somewhere where I would be found. She did not want to throw me away.”

Deprill said it was a shock to see her biological mother standing in the attorney’s office. Thanks to a picture on Facebook, the Burger King baby Deprill was finally able to meet her mother. The first meeting is sure to be a start in forging a relationship between the two.
