Teenagers Using Lip Balm to Feel Like Getting High In Bizarre New Trend

Teenagers have always been known to take part in uncertain and sometimes even dangerous actions. So it really should come as no surprise to anyone to find out teens across the United States are now into a bizarre new trend where they are taking the lip moisturizer known as Burt’s Bees lip balm, which is made from various natural ingredients, such as beeswax, to get high. This action even already has its own name and that is “beezin’”. It is not only weird sounding, physicians actually state this can also be dangerous.

The style of beezin’ has nothing to do with rubbing the lip balm on the person’s mouth, but instead it goes on the tops of the eyelids. Why anyone would ask. Well this is because supposedly there is some sort of tingly sensation that is associated with Burt’s Bees and it seems to mimic the effect, when it is put on the eyelids, of the person feeling like he or she has a buzz or even is actually high.

Dr. Brett Cauthen, who works at a medical clinic in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, stated that the feeling comes from the peppermint oil which is inside the lip balm. It creates a burning sensation and he feels that may be funny to some teenagers. Does this sound like a harmless game for teenagers? Well it is not.

Physicians warn that beezin’ can be extremely dangerous to a person’s health. This trend may lead to serious hazards, such as pink eye or allergic reactions. One doctor even stated it could aid in the spread of the herpes virus.

Dr. Kelly Arbor explained that if a person used the lip balm on a cold sore and then a friend used it on his or her eyelids, the herpes virus could easily be transmitted from the lip balm to the eyeball and then the person could become blind with having herpes in his or her eyes.

One of the representatives for Burt’s Bees stated that numerous teens had put up pictures of themselves beezin’ on different social media sites. The rep stated that there were plenty of natural things that did not belong in eyes such as food, leaves, twigs, dirt and Burt’s Bees Lip Balm. Even though the product is tested and is safe to use for the right purpose, it is recommended that people use the lip balm as directed.

Even though beezin’ is not considered an illegal act, experts say that the unlawful use of drugs among teens in the United States remains extremely high, due in great part to the growing popularity of marijuana. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, back in 2012, just over 35 percent of U.S. 12th graders stated that they had tried marijuana at least one time. During the same period, the alleged risk of smoking marijuana among seniors in high school has declined, perhaps reflecting the current movement to decriminalize the drug for people considered “grown-ups”.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any more ridiculous…

How about toothpaste? Some of it has a minty taste. I bet if you squeezed a tube of it up your nose (snorted it) that you would get just as high as rubbing lip balm on your eyelids.
