Drew Barrymore has definitely come a long way from the young stars troubled youth and has certainly risen from the ashes. Barrymore has been in the spotlight ever since the talented actress appeared as the adorable Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. Since then the Charlie’s Angels star has had some very hard times to overcome. The young actress had problems from the start with issues concerning the 50 First Dates star’s mother and father. With Drew coming from a long line of Barrymore actors, the pressure was on from day one. The Never Been Kissed actress was raised by Barrymore’s mother, Jaid, as father John Drew Barrymore was never a consistent part of the E.T. star’s life. At the tender age of nine, Barrymore’s parents divorced opening the door for the turbulent childhood that awaited Drew alongside the stardom that followed.
The young actress had her first drink at nine years old, smoked marijuana at the age of ten and at twelve years old, took cocaine for the first time. Barrymore was seen clubbing while only ten and stayed out partying until 2 a.m. in the morning celebrating her birthday. It did not take long before Barrymore was put into the ASAP Family Treatment Center to be treated for alcohol and drug addiction but was released just twelve days later to commence the filming of Far From Home. The troubled young star even tried to commit suicide by slashing her wrist with a kitchen knife in October 1989. Following that sad event, Barrymore was entered into rehab for three months.
Two years after, at the age of 15, Barrymore pulls a move that shocks the Hollywood community and families everywhere. Barrymore files for an emancipation decree which would give the actress the same legal rights as an 18-year-old and wins. Barrymore seems to have taken control of her spiraling and out of control life at this point sending hope to many that the troubled teen wanted to get back on track.
At 19, Barrymore marries Jeremy Thomas, a bar owner in Los Angeles, but the bliss does not last long. After two months of marriage Barrymore files for divorce. Barrymore proves her resolve as the actress continues to work hard and lands in People’s 50 Most Beautiful Women in 1997. At that time Barrymore started dating Luke Wilson whom she met while filming the comedy Best Men. The couple also starred together in Home Fries and Barrymore tells People magazine that Wilson “was the most incredible person I’d ever been so fortunate to meet.”
Barrymore marries again, this time to comedian Tom Green but it seems that once again, marriage does not seem to be in Barrymore’s cards. While together, the couple were saved from a house fire when their dog woke them up in time to escape. The couple split after just five months of marriage. Since then Barrymore’s popularity continues to soar and between films the actress has a couple of high-profile relationships including one with actor Justin Long.
Now, Barrymore is happily married to husband Will Kopelman, an art consultant, and the couple had their first child, Olive, in 2012. The loving duo has recently had their second child, Frankie. “Olive has a new little sister, ” the couple said in a statement to People, “and everyone is healthy and happy!”
Many people are asking just how the star does it. Balancing being a wife, a mother, an actress, producer and director not to mention having time to take numerous photo shoots for magazine covers. Now the actress is gracing the cover of Redbook. In the interview with Redbook magazine, one can clearly see just how far this amazingly talented and strong woman has come. Drew Barrymore Proves that a phoenix can rise from the ashes and build a healthy and happy lifestyle. Barrymore opens up candidly saying how she knows there are things about herself that the star just cannot change and adds that there are also things that Barrymore would not want to. Revealing just what an amazing role model Barrymore has become she states, “While I may not be tall and thin, I am capable.” Barrymore’s acceptance of the star’s body is refreshing and promising to young girls everywhere.
Though Barrymore states that her first pregnancy had her nervous most of the time the Wedding Singer star seems to have been in better control with her second. Barrymore touches on how she would like to take the star’s work ethic and pass it onto the children. “I would really like to raise my kids to do summer jobs,” she told Redbook. “I understand that if you are supposed to be somewhere at 3 o’clock,” Barrymore said “you need to be there at 3 o’clock.”
Rising from the ashes of such a turbulent childhood, Drew Barrymore proves to be more grounded than ever and has definitely found the love of her life. Third times a charm as the saying goes and in Barrymore’s case, that seems to fit. Though Barrymore told Redbook that “Nobody gets to have it all,” the actress certainly looks like she does have it all with being on top of her career, being a fantastic mother, happy and remaining in love.
