Nicki Minaj suffered a wardrobe malfunction during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), although it has not yet been revealed exactly what the problem was. The singer appeared to be experiencing much difficulty with her outfit during an on-stage performance with Jessie J and Ariana Grande while they performed their hit Bang Bang.
Dressed in a snug black dress and patterned heels, the 31-year-old Trinidad native appeared to have a problem with her outfit from the very beginning of the performance. While Grande and Jessie J performed to their fullest, Minaj kept a tight hold on the top and middle parts of the dress, as though she was afraid that the outfit was going to fall apart. Although she did her best to brush off the situation and managed to keep up her vocals for her share of the song, fans could not help noticing that something appeared to be up. She finished off her performance without a hitch, however, and left the stage with her co-performers to enormous applause. She later appeared on the stage once more, this time to perform her brand new hit Anaconda, this time in a sparkly green bustier and high-waisted shorts.
The apparent wardrobe malfunction marks the second performance related incident Minaj has suffered this week. Just one day before the VMAs were aired, one of the multi-platinum selling singer’s dancers suffered an injury during a rehearsal performance for the event. The woman was bit by a six-foot long snake, of what is believed to be the anaconda kind. She was taken to hospital with non-critical injuries, as anacondas are not venomous snakes. The possibility of infection is a potential issue, however, hence the need for the dancer to be examined by professionals. The decision was made to remove the snake from the live performance, thus assuring the safety of all involved following the incident. Minaj is not the first artist to use a snake as a performance prop at the VMAs, as pop superstar Britney Spears had one wrapped around her neck during her performance of her hit song I’m A Slave 4 U during the show’s 2001 broadcast.
Minaj has previously won two VMAs in the past, these being awarded to her during the 2011 year. She won Best Hip-Hop video for her song Super Bass, and Best Female Video for Starships. She was not nominated in any category for the 2014 edition of the show. However, not only did she win Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at this year’s BET awards, she was also a part of Young Money’s receipt of the award for Best Group. She is also the first and only female rapper in history to win the former category five years in a row. In total, she was won 64 awards and been nominated for 150. Her debut studio album Pink Friday, which was released in 2010, quickly shot to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.
It is still unknown what caused Nicki Minaj’s discomfort with her wardrobe during her performance on the 2014 VMAs. Neither she nor her representatives have given any statement on the matter.
