Taylor Swift has released the video for her newest single, Shake It Off. The singer took to Facebook earlier today to share the video with her fans.
The video centers around Swift going back and forth between graceful ballerina and urban street performer, showing off some never before seen dance skills. The song details the 24 year old’s battle with criticism surrounding who she is and the choices she makes, particularly focusing on the heavy scrutiny she faces for what many refer to as being a serial dater, and putting her experiences with love into her songs. The single’s title pretty much sums up the Pennsylvania native’s feelings on said criticism, and the song goes on to state her philosophy of living for herself and no one else. The tune has much more of a pop feel than most of the singer’s music, a fact that many listeners are unsure of their feelings about.
The release of the video also provided fans with details of Swift’s much anticipated fifth studio album, titled 1984. The album, which is already available for pre-order, is set to be released on the 27th of October. The release date keeps with the 22 singer’s chart-topping schedule of releasing an album every two years around October. Her latest album, Red, was released in October of 2012 and was a multi-platinum success in multiple countries. Her upcoming album is said to be of a similar variety to her recent single, in that it focuses more on a pop sound than her previous albums.
Although Swift kicked off her musical career in 2006 with a self-titled debut album, she did not gain full recognition until her second album, Fearless, was released in 2008. Her debut album was almost primarily country, hence the reception for it stayed mostly among listeners in the country music genre. Fearless was a crossover into the slightly more popular pop genre, and therefore gained the singer more attention. The enormous success of the singles Love Story and You Belong With Me were responsible for the album earning the title of best-selling album in the United States for 2009. It won a total of four Grammy awards, giving the singer the title of youngest winner ever for Album of the Year.
Following this, the self-proclaimed hopeless romantic became unstoppable in her quest for musical domination. Her next album, Speak Now, sold more than a million copies in the first week of its U.S. release. She became the only female artist in history to reach sales of over two million with two consecutive albums after her aforementioned latest album Red also sold over a million copies in its first week. These sales marked the highest in a decade for the music industry. In total, Swift has achieved 226 awards, including but not limited to seven Grammys, 15 American Music Awards, and 11 Country Music Association Awards. She is also one of the richest celebrities in the world, earning a spot on the Forbes 100 list several years in a row. Her net worth is currently approximated at $180 million.
It remains to be seen if Taylor Swift’s new album will achieve the same record-breaking reception as her previous albums have. Fans will have to judge for themselves upon the record’s October release.
