Disney Infinity 2.0 is the long-awaited toy/video game hybrid that brings together the best and most cherished characters from the Disney and Marvel universe. The anticipated title is the sequel to 2013’s original Disney Infinity which has garnered over $500 million in sales worldwide.
Subtitled as Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes, the game introduces the likes of world-famous super heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Spider-Man. The original version of Infinity was comprised of a cast drawn only from Disney and Pixar vaults. With Disney’s new purchase of the Marvel and Star Wars brands, it only makes sense Infinity would include some members of their new family. Star Wars has yet to make an appearance other than a lightsaber as usable weapon, but Infinity followers anticipate some Star Wars involvement in the 3.0 edition next year around the release date of Star Wars: Episode VII.
The gameplay of Infinity is a rather interesting take that reflects that of the Skylanders series of video games. Every playable character within the game comes with its own individual vinyl figure. Players must place each figure on a base connected to the gaming console in order to play as the character the figure represents. This is a very good marketing plan on Disney’s part as players will yearn to collect all figures within the series, which can be quite an expense at roughly $15 a figure.
Both 1.0 and 2.0 versions of the game come with starter packs priced at around $75 that include the game disc, the Disney Infinity base, three figures and a play set piece. A play set within the Infinity world is a world based off of a particular franchise like Pirates of the Caribbean or The Incredibles where only specified characters from those franchises can play in various mission-based adventures. 2.0 comes with Thor, Iron Man and Black Widow figures and an Avengers-themed play set. The second installment also comes with a new feature called “toy box adventures” which allow any character, Marvel or Disney, to embark on a specific mission within the Toy Box.
The Toy Box in Disney Infinity is where the game’s true magic lies. In the Toy Box, one can openly create their very own world in their own image using the likes of various Marvel and Disney terrains, skies, objects and buildings. The possibilities are literally infinite, hence Infinity. In addition to the many new Marvel characters, new “Disney Originals” characters will be added that are specific to the toy box mode and not partial to a play set. These characters include Tinker Bell, Merida from Brave, Jasmine, Aladdin, Stitch, Donald Duck, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and Hiro and Baymax from the upcoming Disney/Marvel film Big Hero 6. There are also rumors that there are still “Disney Originals” characters that remain unannounced.
The starter pack of 2.0 releases on September 23 alongside the Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy play sets. Characters partial to the aforementioned play sets will be made available at launch as well. The Disney characters and more Marvel individuals will continue to be released throughout the rest of the year and into 2015. A Toy Box starter pack that includes Merida and Stitch alongside the Infinity 2.0 base and game disc will be released on November 4 and will be priced at roughly $60.
The best of Disney and Marvel will be brought together with Disney Infinity 2.0. Players of all ages, genders and gaming experiences have enjoyed Disney Infinity and will be greatly relieved to finally get their hands on the action-packed new sequel. View a trailer for the 2.0 Toy Box below.
