The highly anticipated Magic Mike sequel gets a new addition to its high-profile line-up with the addition of actor-turned-rapper Childish Gambino. According to Warner Brothers’ studios, the artist also known as Donald Glover was announced as one of the major characters to be apart of the male stripper movie alongside Channing Tatum, Jada Pinkett Smith, Elizabeth Banks, Amber Heard, Michael Strahan, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Andie Macdowell and many others. It seems the movie is turning out to be a star-studded event. Considering that 2012’s Magic Mike grossed over $100 million in the box office, it was only a matter of time before the studio decided to capitalize on the demand and expand the viewership with a new roster of diverse characters.
What was only rumor and speculation later became a reality as the announcement of the Magic Mike sequel went public. Fangirls, and some boys, all over were curious as to where the story would lead Tatum’s character and who would be the next to strip down. Considering that the Magic Mike character threw in the towel and decided to walk away from the stripping game for good, the sequel’s plot was more or less ambiguous to where it would lead. Shortly after the reveal that the sequel was taking place, the plot leaked as well.
According to the studios, three years have passed since lead character Mike quit at the height of his game and finds the other Tampa Bay Kings considering to do the same. Before the fellas completely walk away from the stripping life for good, they want to have one last blowout performance and end on a bang in Myrtle Beach with Magic Mike as the headliner. The journey to the final show is coupled with revelations, good times, new acquaintances, old friends, new moves and stops in Savannah and Jacksonville. The guys discover some new tricks and shake off their dysfunctional past while bonding to take one their future endeavors. The only question that remained is where Childish Gambino’s character will fall into place.
Little is still known about what each role the new characters will play, or if Childish Gambino will take the stage to strip down with the fellas. This will be the first time that Childish Gambino stars in a full-length feature that is bound to draw in a large audience. Although Gambino’s star power has been rising over the years with his chart-placing releases and roles in NBC’s Community and minor role on HBO’s Girls, Glover is still not a household name. Following its blockbuster predecessor, Magic Mike XXL is set to a big premiere and even bigger surprises that will gain the artist more notoriety.
Although Gambino as not known as a Hollywood sex-symbol or has the same physique as the Magic Mike XXL co-stars, his role the sequel is another addition to his increasing resume of talents and accomplishments. From Donald Glover’s starring voice role in Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man:Web Warriors to his successful music career as artist Childish Gambino, the young star is not afraid to work outside of his niche. Glover’s role could be a comedic one but his addition to the cast of the Reid Carolin and Channing Tatum-penned movie is another move into mainstream pop-culture.
