Marysville-Pilchuck High School, located about 35 miles north of Seattle, Wash., is the most recent school to be affected by a school shooting that is currently being investigated. At around 10:45 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, a student in an open cafeteria opened fire on students. First reports are that five people were shot. There have been no names released.
As investigation continues at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, known facts are that five people have been shot, one being the gunman who decided to take his life after the shooting. Three of the people shot are in critical condition and another is in less serious condition, two women and one male. The three that are in critical condition were taken by ambulance to Providence Medical Center in Everett, Wa. Students immediately hit the ground after the shots were fired, some students dropped what they were doing and ran. A student who was in the cafeteria was able to speak to reporters, saying that he saw the first show being fired and that he dropped his skateboard and ran.
The students at Marysville-Pilchuck High School were all escorted from classroom to classroom and eventually into busses leading to a church outside of school grounds while the incident was still being investigated. The school has over 2,500 students with faculty and staff. Police took over two hours to sweep the school to find hidden students and cover the grounds. Parents are currently flocking in to check up on their children and make sure everyone is alright. Reports from students say that the unnamed student, a current student at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, stood up in the middle of the cafeteria, pulled out a gun from his pocket and began shooting. He saw a few people just drop to the ground as if they were shot dead.
Marysville-Pilchuck High School, of course, is not the first high school shooting this country has faced. America has had to deal with numerous tragedies with high school shootings. The Columbine High School Massacre in Colorado is known to be one of the worst high school shootings. In 1999, two high school students shot and killed 12 students and a teacher while also injuring 21 other students. Another terrible shooting in 2012 was the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Connecticut. A 20 year old shot and killed 20 children and six staff members. Like this shooting, the shooter, Adam Lanza, took his life after killing all of the children.
With this new Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting and it still being investigated, students must be at an extreme amount of stress. This high school shooting gives an opportunity to look at what these events can cause emotionally. High school shootings are a terrible tragedy in this country. The motives are always into question with these whether it is from bullying, to replicating past shootings. Mental health is always a concern, not just for the shooters and the injured, but for the people that have to witness these terrible events. When students witness these events it can cause extreme symptoms such as PTSD (Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder) and extreme anxiety. Students have always been told to seek help if feeling lost or alone. With more information coming out each minute, it is a good time to look back and put life in perspective.
