On Sept. 29, 2016, the WTA Wuhan Open designated its best four competitors. In the semifinals, Simona Halep will confront Petra Kvitova, while Svetlana Kuznetsova will face-off against Dominika Cibulkova. The winner will be determined on October 1.
Halep vs. Kvitova
Halep qualified for the semifinal after winning against Irina Begu and Yaroslava Shvedova, in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, the Romanian tennis player defeated Madison Keys in 2 sets. The scores were 6-4 and 6-2.
In the first stages, Kvitova won against Jelena Ostapenko, Elina Svitolina, and Angelique Kerber, who is the leader in the WTA rankings. She also defeated Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals, in 2 sets. The scores were 6-3 and 6-4.
In the first semifinal, Halep will face-off against Kvitova. The match will take place on September 30. The winner will qualify for the final of the WTA Wuhan Open.
Kuznetsova vs. Cibulkova
In the other semifinal, Kuznetsova will confront Cibulkova. The Russian athlete qualified after defeating Belinda Bencic, Madison Brengle, and Venus Williams, who was the defending champion. Moreover, in the quarterfinals, Kuznetsova won against Agnieszka Radwanska in 3 sets. The scores were 1-6, 7-6, and 6-4.
Cibulkova qualified for the semifinals after defeating Alize Cornet, Laura Siegemund, and Karolina Pliskova, in the first three rounds. In the quarterfinals, the Slovak tennis player beat Barbora Strycova in 3 sets. The scores were 6-3, 3-6, and 6-4.
The semifinal, between Kuznetsova and Cibulkova, will also take place on September 30.
2016 Wuhan Open
The WTA Wuhan Open designated its best four competitors. It is the third edition of the tournament, which has a total budget of at least $580,000. The final of the Chinese WTA event will take place on October 1, at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center, in Wuhan.
