Romeo and Juliet: Can You Say Rihanna and Chris Brown?

Love and infatuation is a funny thing. It drives different people to do different things. Reports have recently been swirling about Rihanna’s depression rising out of a sense of forbidden love with Chris Brown. By the same token, it’s interesting that some of the same rumors have circulated about Brown wanting to get back together with Rihanna. It’s really starting to shape up into an uncontrollable tragic narrative, and the order of events couldn’t make it any clearer. What we have here is the making of a real life Romeo and Juliet story with all the accoutrements of a Greek tragic drama. Rihanna’s recent interview with Oprah showed that through the criticism she remains true to her roots, continues to grow and may never get over her profound heartfelt connection with Brown.

Three years ago, the Huffington Post reported that Chris Brown and Rihanna began to squabble after leaving Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party. “Shortly after midnight, things blew up; Brown assaulted the singer, leaving the now 24-year-old battered and bruised. Brown was sentenced to five years’ probation, community labor and one year of domestic-violence counseling.

Anybody that follows music will recognize the fact that since that infamous day, Rihanna and Chris Brown have been an ever ending story. In other words, it’s ever ending but continuing. If this sounds like an oxymoron it is.

You see neither one of them can find peace or safety in the arms of others. How does one know this? All you have to do is listen to them. You can listen to a person speak by simply watching how they behave; and you can listen to a person by what they don’t say. So when you sum up the total of what they’re doing and saying it equals or rather speaks an axiomatic phrase: “I’m unhappy without you; I’m incomplete without you.” That’s Rihanna to Christ Brown and Chris Brown to Rihanna.

Perhaps you say, if that’s the case why are they not together?

But what was revealed in the Oprah interview was the fact that Rihanna still harbors feelings for Brown.

Rihanna revealed that closure with her violent father let her forgive the abuse by Chris Brown.

“I lost my best friend … everything I knew switched, in one night.”

Following Oprah’s interview, Chris Brown’s mom took to Twitter and posted a series of cryptic messages.

Fans suspect they may have been directed at Hawkins’ son’s ex-girlfriend, especially after Rihanna spoke extensively about their relationship on OWN.

Fighting tears, Rihanna admitted Sunday that Chris is the “love of my life”, that he was her “best friend”, that they still love each other and are very close.

Hawkins, who has reportedly remained close to the singer since her relationship with Brown ended in 2009, then posted this series of messages:

Only Joyce knows for sure what she meant and who those Tweets were directed toward, but the timing couldn’t have been a coincidence, right?

Perhaps we will never know what browns mom was trying to convey, however, what ever it was, one thing for sure, there is still something very powerful happening between the former lovers.

But it’s more of a a story of love denied between Brown and Rihanna, like Romeo & Juliet, may have become a classic love triangle resembling Shakespeare’s Othello. The story has evolved to feature Brown, Drake and Rihanna. But when it’s all settled and done with, Brown and Rihanna will have to deal with it. Success of failure, they’ll have to deal with it.

We are spectators watching the whole thing unfold a little bit at a time. Two months ago, Brown was fanning the flames of a feud with Drake when he took to his Twitter account and lunched another one of his typical Chris Brown tirades, tweeting; “It upsets u that I’m not this hoodlum enraged, young black man you wanna portray me as. They did it to Mike… I can handle it! #imdone.” He just can’t walk away, and that’s exactly how tragedy is played out; it orders your behavior.

Let’s hope that we are misreading the tea leafs and take the stance that this too will pass. But it’s not entirely up to us; it’s up to Chris Brown and as surprising as this might sound it’s up to Rihanna too. He can perhaps stop this before it’s too late. I know that the Greeks were unable to prevent their own tragic outcomes, and Shakespeare’s tragedies seemed to follow the same predictable course; sadly, it appears that neither may be able to reverse the inevitable until it’s far too late. Just ask “Antigone.”

So we wait, Brown and Drake have been sued by members of the WIP New York City Club for $16 million; and Rihanna, taking criticism following her open interview with Oprah. There’s a tragedy being put in place, and we perhaps will be just as guilty, because of our proclivity to want to see others fall.

The VMA awards will give us another look at these two as they have both accepted duties. So the show is taking place in Los Angeles on Sept. 6.

Chris Brown, Rihanna, Drake all appearing under one roof.

And imagine this: both the guys are up for “Best Male Video.” It’s going to be another battle royale.

One source tells US Magazine that drama is the desire of the night.

They are hoping a fight breaks out,” the source says. “Ratings galore!” But don’t count of anything like that happening. If you know a sucker that would be willing to bet you on that, take the bet.

“I think he was the love of my life,” Rihanna continued. “He was my first love and I see that he loved me the same way. I truly love him. The main thing for me is he’s at peace. I’m not at peace if he’s not happy or he’s still lonely. I care. It actually matters that he finds that peace.”

Just think about this for just a minute. Think, Romeo and Juliet and at the end of you equation the sum equals, Rihanna and Chris Brown. It a bet you can count on.
