So-Cal’s “Plain Jane” Bank Bandit Arrested: FBI

By Jim Donahue

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and FBI announced today the arrest of Sylvia Helen Garcia, 38, of Downey, CA, suspected in at least 6 recent So-Cal bank robberies.

The “Plain Jane Bandit,” as she has been referred to, has been linked to a series of bank robberies starting July 12 in Santa Fe Springs and extended to Whittier, Moreno Valley, Buena Park and Wildomar.

FBI officials said that anonymous witness information and images from surveillance cameras that had been circulating on the internet aided in her capture. She has also been linked to two failed bank robberies.

On Monday Garcia walked into the Bank of America branch on Paramount Blvd in Downey, and demanded money but left empty handed, chalking up another failed robbery attempt.

U.S. Bank offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the robber. All the successful robberies were at U.S. Bank branches.

Authorities declined to say how much money she took because of concerns about copycat robberies, indicating the amount stolen was “insignificant”

As in the other incidents, the woman spoke of a person outside the bank, officials said. Authorities believe the other person is a ruse because no witnesses have reported seeing an accomplice.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
