Rihanna leads the MTV (EMA) field while Taylor Swift, Bieber and Perry closely trail behind the pop idol. Rihanna has six nominations.
The Barbados-born singer is leading the way at the annual ceremony, receiving nods in major categories including Best Female Artist, Best Song and Best Pop. The “We Found Love” hitmaker is up for a host of top accolades, including Best Pop Act, Best Look, Biggest Fans and Best Female — a category which will see her battle Katy Perry, Pink, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift is in the running for five prizes. She and Rihanna will battle it out in the Best Female Artist category, along with Katy Perry, Pink and Nicki Minaj.
The two stars are also both vying for the Best Pop prize, with Justin Bieber, No Doubt and Katy Perry providing them with stiff competition.
Justin Bieber and Perry — who will both take on Swift and Rihanna for the title of Best Pop act — received four nominations each, while several acts picked up a hat-trick of nominations including Nicki, Lady Gaga and Carly Rae Jepsen, who faces stiff competition from Lana Del Rey, One Direction, fun. and Rita Ora for Best Newcomer.
In with a chance of taking home the Best Song trophy is Carly Rae Jepsen for Call Me Maybe and Gotye for Somebody That I Used To Know. Several collaborations also get a look in, with Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris’ song We Found Love and Pitbull featuring Chris Brown’s track International Love nominated.
The group is rounded out with fun. featuring Janelle Monáe’s song We Are Young.
Competing for the eagerly-anticipated Best Male award are Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Flo Rida, Pitbull and Jay-Z.
No less than 18 acts are up for the Best World Stage category — which celebrates the range and breadth of all the music that MTV has to offer by showcasing incredible artists from all parts of the world — such as Sean Paul, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5 and B.o.B.
The winners will be announced at the ceremony in Frankfurt, Germany, on November 11, with performers at the event yet to be announced.
