A few minutes ago, today 1/23/2013, Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense, announced the lifting of a 1994 ban on women serving on the front lines in combat. This opens up many options previously denied women serving in our armed forces.
He acted with the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The 1994 ban made it impossible for women to be assigned to smaller, elite, combat units.
The military will have until 2016 to decide if they wish to petition against special exceptions denying the addition of women to its ranks.
