At least 245 people lost their lives in a night club fire early Sunday morning in Brasilia. Over 200 more were injured.
More than 900 people were in the “Kiss Club” in southern Brazil when the fire broke out. The cause is still under investigation, but firemen believe it was started when the band set off fireworks and sparks ignited the roof. A cashier yelled fire and everyone scrambled for the exits, only one of which was working properly.
Most people died as they were trampled to death or injured badly enough that they could not escape. Some took refuge in the bathrooms and suffocated to death.
The club was located in the university city of Santa Maria, with a population of about 250,000.
